The popular series now in it’s 12th year, presents the rich and vibrant rhythms and sounds of Minnesota’s multi-cultural community at free outdoor performances at the Minnesota History Center.

Listen to infectious music and get out your dancing shoes for lusty Bavarian polka, sizzling Brazilian samba and classic big band swing! Co-sponsor Tapestry Folkdance Center provides instructors to lead the way. Bring a lawn chair, and pack a picnic or purchase food from the Café Minnesota terrace grill.

Performances are free and held on the Laura Jane Musser Plaza at the Minnesota History Center. In case of inclement weather, events will move inside. Programs subject to change. Museum galleries and stores are open until 8 pm and the admission fee is waived on Tuesday evenings.

Nine Nights

July 1

Almkaffee and Die Alte Streich
Bavarian
It’s a Bavarian party and Volkstanzabend (folk dance evening) with the duo Almkaffe, the quintet, Die Alte Streich and the S. G. Edelweiss Dancers. The three groups join forces to mix and match traditional tunes to present toe-tapping folk dance music of upper Bavaria and Austria. “Gemütlichkeit” (fun for all)!

July 8

Rockin’ Hollywoods
Solid Gold Rock & Roll
A tribute to "Minnesota’s Greatest Generation
*extended evening-6:30 to 8:30 pm and 50s style show

These hep cats have been be-bopping with energy and excitement since 1973. Great vocals, period costumes, physical choreography and musicianship captivate young and young at heart! Make the scene in your 50s threads--then model in a fashion show during the 7:30 pm intermission and win prizes that are coolsville! And most importantly, brush up on your Twist and Stroll with instructors from Tapestry Folkdance Center

July 15

Brasamba
Brazilian
Brasamba is a fun-loving group of musicians who can't get enough of Brazilian music and are eager to share the seductive rhythms with their audiences. No matter what the style, Brasamba is all about fun, so get ready to dance because when Brasamba takes the stage, you won't be able to stay in your seat! A Tapestry Folkdance instructor will put some sizzle into your syncopated Samba!

July 22

Flip the Cat
Irish/Celtic
Flip the Cat takes Irish music on a forced march to places it has never been. The band is known for its signature combination of instruments (bouzouki, fiddles, mandolin, uilleann pipes, didgeridoo) coupled with an unabashed nod to the influences of their youth, be it country western music, movie themes, or whatever was in their parents' record collection. Feel the luck of the Irish and learn some dandy footwork with a Tapestry Folkdance instructor.

July 29

Red Rock Swing Band
Classic Swing
A tribute to "Minnesota’s Greatest Generation
*extended evening—6:30 to 8:30 pm with displays of World War II gear and vintage clothing

It’s swing time! Dig out those zoot suits and fedoras or just grab your favorite pair of dancing shoes and come hear the tunes of the Greatest Generation. The Red Rock Swing Band is a 17 piece big band specializing in classic swing music from the Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and Duke Ellington era to the modern swing revival.

August 5

Jumbo Ya Ya
Cajun/Zydeco
Jumbo Ya Ya means big fun! They play 60s style Zydeco, blues, and swamp pop—music that was born and raised in and around the Mississippi River and the Delta. A Tapestry Folkdance instructor will inspire feet to hear the beat.

August 12

Mila Vocal Ensemble and the Niks
Balkan
Enjoy thrilling vocal harmonies accompanied by a live folk ensemble with repertoire that comes from the heart of Eastern Europe. Join Mila Vocal Ensemble and the Niks as they recreate the “village square” with music and folk dances that everyone can learn.

August 19

Sowah Mensah and Friends
West African
Master Drummer and composer, Sowah Mensah, a native of Ghana, West Africa is adept at a wide range of drumming styles and is a multi-instrumentalist who also plays bamboo flutes, xylophones and mbiras. An ensemble of musicians and friends will join together to share an evening of joyous West African music. The pulsating rhythms and contagious beat will get feet and arms moving with choreography provided by a Tapestry Folkdance Center instructor.

August 26

Contratopia
American Folk
Enjoy the lively, down home music of Contratopia and their enthusiasm for jigs, reels and waltzs. With contra dancing your feet are never asked to do more than walk to the music and a caller teaches each dance. However, there’s nothing like improvisational surprises and this group of musicians believes that being a little unpredictable also makes a dance more fun!
