Editorial InternTitle:  Editorial Assistant/Intern

Department:  MHS Press

Supervisor:  Head of MHS Press

Hours: 8-15 hours/week

Timeframe:  Fall 2013 and Spring 2014

Status:  Unpaid; a limited number of stipends may be available to students from under-represented communities

Location: MN History Center, Saint Paul, MN

Project Summary: Editorial assistant working with Press director and author for upcoming Toys book: illustration research, including seeking permissions, and fact-checking/date verification on particular toys and trends. Other book editorial duties as assigned, including database entry, market research, editorial assistance on other Press books

Ideal degrees: B.A. or M.A. in American Studies, history, english or journalism.

Student Qualifications:  Preferably a graduate-level student with a passion for history, research, contemporary American culture with skills in the following:

*writing

*research, on-site and internet, academic and general archives

*written communication: independent communication among various collectors and art/photo rights holders

*database and spreadsheet entry and tracking

*must feel comfortable managing a schedule and communicating effectively with books team on assigned duties

Student Responsibilities:

  •  The intern will work directly with Press director, managing editor, book author and rights holders
  •  The intern will be part of a books team that includes a second Exhibits intern

Knowledge intern is expected to gain:

  • Book publication process, including development, art and illustration programs, scheduling and project management, market research
  •  Editorial skills, including fact-checking, proofreading, editing, database management

Additional Materials Required:

  • Writing sample demonstrating writing and research
