Hours: 20 hours/week

Timeframe: Fall 2013 (September - December)

Status: Unpaid, a limited number of stipends are available to students from communities of color underrepresented in the Society.

Location: Minnesota History Center, Saint Paul, MN

Project Summary: The intern will provide Windows and Macintosh help desk support to Society users in concert with network operations. The incumbent will provide installation and support of desktop hardware and software that run Windows XP and Windows 7 operating system. The incumbent will help plan, design, develop and maintain effective desktop computers hardware and software technology for all society users. Other duties include working with the network team as assigned. This position includes working in an office environment and customer service duties.

Ideal degrees: Computer science, computer engineering, information technology, educational technology or other related field.

Student Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with or willingness to support a variety of software applications and hardware.
  • Ability to document, and communicate clearly and accurately technical concepts in person and in a help desk software program.
  • Comfort level with taking on multiple tasks and working with more than one task assignment.
  • Lifting 50lbs of hardware of floor to desk and or rolling cart.

Ideal degrees: Computer science, computer engineering, information technology, educational technology or other related field.

Student Responsibilities:

Setup and configure desktop workstations at the HC.

• Documentation of the wiring inside the network closets.

• Assist the team in help desk projects that come from the help desk log.

• Work with the network team doing miscellaneous duties like mounting server or reviewing alerts on the production servers.

Knowledge intern is expected to gain: 

  • Confidence working in a professional IT setting
  • Experience working with help desk and network administration staff in a production environment
  • Project management tracking of various concurrent projects
  • Working in a team to solve technical problems
