Internship Title: Minnesota Encyclopedia Intern

Department: Minnesota Historical Society Press

Supervisor: MHS Press Program Associate

Hours: 20 hrs per week.

Timeframe: Fall 2013 (September-December)

Location: Minnesota History Center, Saint Paul, MN

Project Summary: The Minnesota Encyclopedia Intern will assist with the growth and development of a new, publicly available online encyclopedia about Minnesota. The Encyclopedia, created by the Minnesota Historical Society, is sharing current, reliable and relevant information about significant people, places, events and things in Minnesota history. For more, see the project at www.mnopedia.org. This is an office position that will involve extended periods of time on a computer or in the library doing research, and it will involve occasional lifting of heavy books.

Ideal Degrees: History, ethnic studies, women’s studies, American studies, art history, or related field.

Student Qualifications: Upper level junior, senior or graduate-level students.  Preference will be given to graduate-level students. The Minnesota Encyclopedia Intern should be trained in historical research techniques and practices, including familiarity with primary sources. He/she should also have demonstrated writing abilities, top-notch organizational skills, an eye for detail and accuracy, and an ability to meet deadlines. Knowledge of American and Minnesota history and the demonstrated ability to work independently are also desired.

Student Responsibilities:

  • Create new original content for the Encyclopedia
  • Provide research assistance on previously identified topics
  • Fact-check Encyclopedia content
  • Secure rights to image, audio and video resources

Knowledge Intern Is Expected to Gain:

  • Inside knowledge of an innovative educational resource
  • Familiarity with MHS historical resources and how to use them
  • Experience creating content for the Web
  • Opportunity to web-publish original research and writing under his/her byline

Additional Materials Required:

  • Writing sample of no more than 5 pages, which should demonstrate writing and research skills. Excerpts from longer pieces and examples of exhibit copy or other museum writing are allowed.
