Governance Strategic PlanningTitle:  Governance and Strategic Planning Intern

Department:  Director’s Office

Supervisor:  Management Specialist

Hours:  10-15 hours per week

Timeframe:   Summer 2013 (June-August)

Status:  Unpaid. (A limited number of stipends are available to students from communities of color who are underrepresented in the Society).

Location: Minnesota History Center, Saint Paul, MN

Project Summary: The director’s office is the point of contact for the Society’s governing board and for matters related to relations with the legislature and state government.  This office directly works with the director, senior leadership team and board.  The intern will provide overall support to the director’s office in coordination with the management specialist, executive assistant and other intern(s).   

Ideal degrees:   Nonprofit management, history or related field. Interest in governance and strategic planning is a plus. 

Student Qualifications:  Graduate students or undergraduate seniors and juniors are encouraged to apply. Must possess strong writing and editing skills, be detailed orientated and possess advanced skills with Microsoft Office and Google Applications, including Docs, Calendar, Groups and Sites. Candidate must be able to maintain strict confidentiality regarding all aspects of his/her work.  

Student Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research to develop new decision-making processes on topics including:
    • Searchable electronic database for organizing meeting minutes and tracking board action items
    • Best practices related to governance, particularly new trends and technology
    • Management of online files
    • Other research topics or projects as assigned
  •  Maintain information on board attendance, terms limits, meeting minutes and contact information.  Support with institutional strategic planning development, tracking, and reporting processes
  • Oversee development of the internal Strategic Plan and Senior Leadership Team Google Calendars
  • Attend executive council, management council, strategic planning and other meetings as relevant
  • Provide administrative support to executive assistant with board mailings and contact list management
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

Knowledge intern is expected to gain:

  • Knowledge about strategic planning process, implementation and evaluation
  • Knowledge about the governance process and the role a board plays in a nonprofit
  • Experience developing and improving systems and processes
  • Experience working alongside professional staff
  • Opportunity to see “high level” work at a large institution
