Teaching Collection Research Interns

All positions filled for Summer 2008.

The intern will engage in

  1. researching the background and history of the objects that are a part of the museum’s teaching collection,
  2. writing summaries of each object’s history for use by the museum’s teaching staff, and
  3. assisting staff with other duties related to maintenance of teaching collection database.

The collection, organized thematically, contains artifacts representing the rich history of Minnesota, everything from Native American artifacts to clothing to archival materials and everyday objects. The intern will work closely with the School Programs Manager, the School and School Outreach Programs Associate and the staff of the Library and Research Center.

Key skills include a developed ability to conduct historical research and analysis, excellent written communication skills, and a high level of comfort with Microsoft Word and internet search processes. The intern should be highly organized and self-motivated, with a dedicated attention to detail. Internship requires a minimum 15 hours per week. Public Programs Intern

  • Position availability varies. Please inquire via email.

The intern will Assist museum education staff with ongoing development, preparation and execution of public programs for families and for adult audiences. These programs include, but are not limited to, cultural festivals and concerts for families, lectures, conversation series and theatrical performances for adults. Duties may include front-of-house work with the museum-going public, collaboration on creation of historical support materials (e.g. informational handouts related to a variety of topics) for public audiences, logistical planning for programs and events, brainstorming new program ideas or solutions for existing programming challenges, and prep work related to hands-on history activities for families.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate superior customer service skills and a strong ability to interact positively with people of all ages. Excellent verbal communication abilities and proven organizational abilities also required. Internship requires a minimum of 10-15 hours per week. Hours vary. Some weekends and evenings required.
