LIBRARY PROCESSING MANAGER
The Minnesota Historical Society (MHS), one of the nation's leading historical organizations with a major research center and extensive collections, museum exhibits and educational programs, and 18 historic sites seeks a Library Processing Manager to direct the processing of the Society’s library collections (which may include books, serials, newspapers, maps, sound and visual media, and networked resources) for permanent preservation and for public reference and research use, to coordinate that work with the overall work of the Collections Management department, and to participate in carrying out that work. This is a full-time, regular position located at the History Center in St. Paul, MN.
SUMMARY OF WORK: Major responsibilities include: 1) managing the operations of the Library Processing Section to effectively serve audience needs and department, divisional, and institutional goals; 2) participate in the development of department priorities and plans as part of the department’s management team; 3) supervise the Library Processing Section staff; 4) direct the complicated management of newspaper and periodical issuances; 5) develop and implement cataloging and metadata policies and procedures for library materials; 6) provide reference service in the Library as scheduled, so that the research collections are made available to the public, and so that the audience impacts of collection discovery and access tools and procedures are continually evaluated; and 7) represent the section, the department, and the Society in other meetings and activities.
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum qualifications include: 1) comprehensive knowledge of and extensive experience in the cataloging of a wide range of library materials, regardless of format, and an understanding of current trends and issues affecting such cataloging; 2) comprehensive knowledge of national cataloging standards, programs, and authorities including the Ango-American Cataloguing Rules and their interpretations, other specialized cataloging rules, the MARC21 formats, the Library of Congress authority files, and specialized subject and form/genre thesauri; 3) detailed understanding of the procedures and data repositories of OCLC, MULS, and MnPALS, sufficient to direct the creation and maintenance of catalog, holdings, and authority records in those systems and to resolve problems that arise from their use at MHS; 4) knowledge of and experience with current and emerging metadata standards for discovery and use of networked information resources; 5) awareness of Minnesota and American history, related disciplines and research methodologies, equivalent to that attainable through a liberal arts bachelor's degree; 6) ability to produce clear and understandable documentation of policies and procedures and to train others in their application. Desirable qualifications include: 1) master’s degree in Library Science or related discipline; 2) three years’ managerial or supervisory experience in a library setting.
SALARY: $3,916 monthly minimum
