DESIGN AND PRODUCTION MANAGER
The Minnesota Historical Society’s Library, Publications & Collections division seeks a Design & Production Manager to manage all phases of design, production, printing, and binding of works published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press in both print and digital formats. This is a full-time, regular position (2088 annual hours) located at the History Center in St. Paul, MN.
Summary of work: Responsibilities include: 1) securing cost quotations, following proper bidding procedures, from typesetters, printers, electronic prepress services, and binders to formulate project manufacturing estimates for books, e-books, sound recordings, and miscellaneous other pieces; 2) designing or directing free-lance designers in the creation of imaginative, appropriate and attractive publications that will enhance the reputation of the MHS publication program within budget and schedule restraints; 3) directing the work of typesetters, electronic prepress suppliers, printers, binders, and other suppliers to obtain quality products on schedule and within project budgets; 4) formulating various regular production reports to monitor projects’ status and conformance with schedules and budgets; and 5) researching, recommending, and implementing technical and work-flow aspects of an electronic book publishing program.
Minimum Qualifications:
- B.A. plus 6 years publications production and print experience or equivalent OR an advanced degree plus 5 years publications production and print experience or equivalent.
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of design and graphic production and the printing arts.
- Expert design skills and ability to apply them to scholarly and trade publications, promotional pieces, and informational materials.
- Knowledge of traditional printing technology and publishing procedures; must be able to apply knowledge to produce high-quality publications at lowest price.
- Knowledge of e-book technology and publishing procedures; must be able to produce high-quality publications at lowest price.
- Organizational skills necessary to meet deadlines and follow budget guidelines.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Ability to set reasonable schedules and manage time to meet them.
- Ability to negotiate reductions in costs with vendors whose work does not meet standards.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to keep accurate records
- Knowledge of MHS policies and procedures relating to the work of the MHS Press.
- Knowledge of vendors-in Minnesota, the U.S. and in foreign countries that supply services that meet the MHS Press’s needs.
- Knowledge of computer technology sufficient for developing plans or programs to apply that technology to the work of the division.
Salary: $3,860.00 monthly minimum.
