DESIGNER/DEVELOPER
The Minnesota Historical Society's Enterprise Technology & Business Development department seeks an experienced and innovative Web Designer/Developer to conceive of, prototype, develop and test rich interactive applications, Drupal based and static web sites.  You’ll be one of the wizards behind our stellar graphical interfaces.  You’ll prepare digital assets (e.g. text, images, audio and video) and design them into web sites that engage a range of audiences from elementary students to museum visitors to researchers. You will work with a variety of people across the Society’s diverse organizational functions as well as fellow web development professionals - all energized to serve our educational mission.  If your enthusiasm for technology is matched only by your passion for education, you’ll find that the joy of working with kindred spirits can only be matched by the thrill of helping people use information communication technologies (ICT) to make a personal connection to the past.  We’re looking for a progressive, highly-organized individual who can grapple with the details without losing sight of the big picture – someone who understands technology and its power, but who always keeps our organization’s mission, goals and deadlines first and foremost.  You’re a born multi-tasker who understands priorities and project schedules, and is comfortable with change.  You communicate efficiently and elegantly, and work collaboratively with team mates.  This is a full-time, project position (2088 annual hours) located at the History Center in St. Paul, MN working through June 30, 2011.  Renewal dependent upon available funding and program need.


Summary of work: Responsibilities include: 1) work with the Society’s staff to determine web site vision and requirements and is able to present and sell ideas to staff, develop and express concepts visually and ensures the original design vision of a project is retained throughout the web site and its lifecycle; 2)  develop detailed prototypes and web interfaces for site applications; 3) encode web sites using Flash, Drupal or other web development languages; 4) structure and execute usability and functionality testing; and 5) prepare multimedia assets to incorporate into web sites.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Computer Animation or related field, Certificate in Web Design, or equivalent work experience that has resulted in a level of web site design understanding indistinguishable from that acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Three years experience in conceiving, designing and implementing web site navigation, graphical user interface, and information architecture.
  • Three years experience programming using HTML, XHTML, CSS and client side scripting tools such JavaScript or AJAX.
  • Two years experience developing rich interactive applications using Flash and Action Script.
  • Functional knowledge of building browser neutral web site interfaces that are ADA and Section 508 compliant.
  • Two years experience of testing along various development stages, e.g. usability testing, unit testing and system testing.
  • Proficient in the use of Adobe Creative Suite applications.
  • Self motivated. Strong planning, detail management and follow-up skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, establish and maintain collaborative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Experience in coordinating multiple projects simultaneously.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • 1+ years Drupal experience.
  • 1+ years experience developing applications using Adobe Flex or Air.
  • Working knowledge of programming languages to produce dynamic web sites such as Cold Fusion, ASP, Java or PHP.
  • Two years experience in building browser neutral web site interfaces that are ADA and Section 508 compliant.
  • Experience in video and/or audio production, streaming media and web deployment thereof.
  • Working knowledge of app development for third party products such as iPhone app, Facebook widget, browser plugins.
  • Conversant in social media technologies.
  • Functional knowledge of search engine optimization.
  • Experience in a cultural organization such as museum, library or education institution.

Salary:  $3,975.00 monthly minimum.
