TRAVELING EXHIBITS SPECIALIST

The Minnesota Historical Society’s Historic Programs & Education division seeks applicants for a Traveling Exhibits Specialist to manage and coordinate incoming exhibitions from other organizations and to manage and coordinate all aspects of MHS produced exhibition tours.  This is a full-time, project position (2,088 annual hours) located at the History Center in St. Paul, MN working through June 30, 2011.  Renewal dependent upon available funding and program need.

Summary of Work:  Responsibilities include: 1) acts as MHS’ primary representative for all outgoing traveling exhibitions; 2) serves as primary liaison for the History Center on all incoming traveling exhibitions; 3) provides exhibition project management, facilitation and coordination for new traveling exhibitions generated within MHS; and 4) maintains detailed annual and multi-year traveling exhibition program budgets.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.A. degree or in history, education, museum studies or a related field plus 5 years experience working in a traveling exhibition or museum exhibition production program or company or equivalent OR an advanced degree plus 3 years program experience or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of basic museum practices including exhibit production and installation techniques; conservation factors and proper handling of artifacts; design, graphics, and media production techniques; and an ability to evaluate the quality of design work.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple complex and simple projects on discrete timetables simultaneously.
  • Ability to prepare clear and accurate project schedules and budgets.
  • Proficiency with personal computers, including word processing and spreadsheet applications, preferably with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Experience making estimates and purchasing materials and services within budget constraints and policy procedures.
  • Considerable ability to compile, read, analyze and synthesize information, often in the form of legal contracts, bid documents and routine correspondence by mail and email.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Strong presentation and/or sales skills with an ability to confidently and clearly communicate with individuals and groups, orally and in writing.
  • Overall comfort with technology, its applications for programs and operations, as well as willing and able to learn new software applications.
  • Experience successfully managing detailed budgets, with the ability to work with the MUNIS purchasing and budget tracking system.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate the work of others, to plan and realize complex projects.
  • Strong leadership skills including human relations, personnel management and ability to work well with others in a collaborative and creative work culture.
  • Considerable ability in evaluating qualitative differences in the proposals and workmanship of staff and vendors.
  • Ability to represent MHS well in work with community and non MHS museum organizations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including well developed negotiation and mediation skills, with the ability to create and sustain partnerships with interested organizations.

Salary:  $3,484.00 monthly minimum.
