PRESERVATION SPECIALIST, ARTS & CULTURAL HERITAGE FUND

The Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) seeks applicants for a Preservation Specialist, Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund, to promote the growth in capacity of its many partners across the state who preserve Minnesota history represented by the built environment.  Important outreach components include listening carefully to concerns, coaching potential applicants, nurturing networks, and advising.  This is a full-time, project position (2,088 annual hours) located at the History Center in St. Paul, MN, working through June 30, 2012.  Renewal dependent upon available funding and program need.

Summary of Work:  Responsibilities include: 1) provides outreach and technical assistance to organizations in evaluating, nominating, and preserving the built environment with respect toward accessing an Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund grant; 2) coordinates the monitoring of covenants and letters of agreement for grant-assisted projects, including those funded through the Historical and Cultural Grants Program funded by the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund; 3) expedites handling of correspondence, requests for assistance, and phone calls; 4) represents the Society and/or department at events and programs of county and local historical organizations, and delivers remarks when appropriate; and 5) responds independently to questions from partners and members of the public with regard to Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the treatment of Historic Properties.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in one of the following disciplines:  Architectural History, Architecture, or Historic Architecture.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize projects according to deadlines; complete complex projects independently, and work under changing and tight time constraints.
  • Strong customer service orientation with solid presentational skills to address varying audiences (one-on-one to large groups) with a range of professional museum/history field skills and training (from none to general mastery).
  • Familiarity and experience with federal historic preservation programs.
  • Basic knowledge of American and Minnesota architectural development and technology.
  • Ability and skills to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of constituent training and expertise.
  • A valid driver’s license and a willingness to travel.
  • A willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Professional degree in architecture or state license to practice architecture. 
  • Three (3) years professional experience providing general technical advice and training about historic preservation, working with preservation and restoration projects, including detailed investigations of historic structures, preparations of historic structures reports, and preparation of plans and specifications for preservation projects. 
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills to negotiate, mediate and collaborate with a wide variety of people with a diverse range of knowledge and skills; and diverse backgrounds, education and interests.

Salary:  $3,484.00 monthly minimum.
