The Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) seeks applicants for a Program Associate, School Programs to plan, implement and evaluate engaging educational programs in a talking circle format for 6th through 12th grade teachers and students.   This is a part-time, project position (728 annual hours) located at the History Center in St. Paul, MN working through May 31, 2013.  Renewal is dependent upon available funding and program need.

Summary of Work: 
Responsibilities include: 1) plan, develop, and implement engaging and educational programs for 6th through 12th grade teachers and students in a talking circle format on topics supportive of and consistent with the goals of the US-Dakota War of 1862 exhibit and surrounding programming; 2) prepare training and support materials for staff and contract circle keepers that deliver programs; 3) coordinate evaluation and documentation of program; 4) plan and oversee the work of contract circle keepers, interns, and volunteers; and 5) attend meetings and participate in committees and programs. 


Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.A. in education, art education, history, American studies, or a related field, plus three years program experience or equivalent OR an advanced degree plus two years program experience or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, develop and implement engaging and educational programs for school audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to administer programs by creating and maintaining schedules, records and reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract and engage diverse audiences especially those within the Dakota community, with competency and sensitivity on racial and cultural, gender, age, education and economic differences.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and conduct historical research that results in an activity or program.
  • Demonstrated ability to work harmoniously and productively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Intermediate word processing, spreadsheet, and database computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, or collaborative work group setting, especially with community groups and educational and cultural organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of visitor studies research and evaluation techniques.


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with talking circle program techniques and using them in an educational or museum setting.
  • Strong knowledge of Minnesota and American history.
  • Knowledge of museum education theory, curriculum development and current issues and practices in K-12 education.
  • Familiarity with History Center school, gallery and outreach programs.
  • Knowledge of visitor studies research and evaluation techniques.


Salary:  $3,150.00 monthly minimum.
