ASSOCIATE CURATOR

 

The Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) seeks applicants for an Associate Curator to develop, document, interpret, promote access/use and preserve the historic/vernacular photograph, moving image, recorded music, poster, and audio collections of MHS.  This is a regular, full- time position (2,088 hours) located at the History Center in St. Paul, MN.

Summary of Work:  Responsibilities include: 1) manages photograph and moving image collections to ensure they are accurately accessioned and cataloged, and efficiently entered into the database system;  2) evaluates, recommends and acquires photographs and moving images for the collection, within MHS collection policy, to ensure the continuing quality of the collection; 3) creates regular interpretive materials, presentations and occasional exhibits about Minnesota history using the photograph and moving image collection; 4) works with outside constituents and MHS staff to increase access and use of the collection; and 5) implements preservation plans (physical and digital) and coordinates conservation strategies in keeping with best professional practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.A. in museum studies, history of art or photography, American history, cultural studies or closely related field, plus three years experience working in a museum or similar non-profit organization or equivalent OR an advanced degree plus two years program experience or equivalent. 
  • Experience with collection databases.
  • Experience with photographic collections. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Experience with collection acquisition, management and processing.
  • Experience handling museum and archival material.
  • Knowledge of the history of photography.
  • Knowledge of American history.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • M.A. in library sciences, museum studies, history of art or photography, American or public history, cultural studies or a closely related field.
  • Three years experience working in a museum or similar non-profit organization.
  • Knowledge of copyright law and rights and reproductions procedures.
  • Knowledge of MHS collections.
  • Knowledge of Minnesota history.
  • Specific knowledge of MHS database Ke Emu.
  • Public speaking experience.

Salary:  $3,150.00 monthly minimum
