FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) About MHS Membership

Don't leave home without your membership card! As you make plans to visit the Society's museums and historic sites, here are some friendly reminders about how your benefits work. These are answers to some questions frequently asked about membership.

What is the difference between a Household and an Individual membership?
Household membership covers two adults and any children under age 18 in the same household or grandchildren. Any two adults in the same household may be listed, regardless of their relationship. Or a childcare worker - a nanny, for example - can be listed as one of the two adults.
Individual membership covers one adult.

How long does it take to receive my member cards?
It typically takes two to four weeks after the membership office receives a completed membership application to receive a set of member cards via the mail.

If you are joining or renewing your membership while visiting the History Center, Mill City Museum or historic sites you will be issued a temporary membership card (good for 30 days) that you can begin using to receive your benefits right away.

What if I lose my member cards?
Contact the membership office at membership@mnhs.org or call us at 651-259-3131 or 1-888-293-4440 and let us know. We will replace them at no charge.

Can I use my membership without my member cards?
We strongly encourage our members to carry their cards with them at all times as this is the most efficient way to determine whether your membership is current.

What are the benefits I can receive at the historic sites?
You will receive free admission for the people covered by your membership category during regular programming at the site you are visiting. If you are visiting during a special event, you may be charged a nominal fee that has been discounted for Society members. If the MHS-operated site you are visiting has a gift shop, you will receive the standard members' 10 percent discount on your purchases. Note: Fort Ridgely and Historic Forestville require state park stickers.

What are the benefits I can receive at the History Center?
You will receive free admission to the exhibits, a discount on your parking with your validated parking ticket and your current membership card (you can have this validated at the Information Desk in the History Center). You will receive a 10-percent discount on purchases in the Museum Stores, on some services in the Library and on meals in Café Minnesota (note: ask for your Café Minnesota discount and show your current membership before your meal is rung up. You will not be given the discount without your membership card.)

What are the benefits I can receive at Mill City Museum?
You will receive free admission to the museum and passes to the Flour Tower ride. You will also receive a 10% discount on purchases in the Gift Shop as well as meals in Mill City Museum Café.

How long does my membership last?
A full 12 months no matter when you join. You will receive your first notice to renew about six weeks before your membership expires and you can renew through the mail, over the phone, or while visiting the History Center or any of our historic sites.

Is my membership good at other museums?
Yes. Your current Minnesota Historical Society membership card entitles you to receive benefits at more than 105 accredited historical organizations and museums affiliated with Time Travelers in over 40 states. A complete listing of Time Travelers affiliates can be found online or by contacting the membership office.

How do I update my membership information?
To make any address, phone or other changes, print out and complete the update member information form and mail, fax, or email it to the Membership Office. You may also call us at 651-259-3131 or 1-888-293-4440.

Can I give a gift of membership?
Yes. To give a gift of membership, use the printable membership form. Gift memberships may also be purchased by calling 651-259-3131 or 1-888-293-4440 or by email at membership@mnhs.org.
