History Center volunteers help make history come alive. Customer service volunteers greet visitors, help individuals with genealogical research in the library, or assist families during special events. Behind the scenes volunteers may assist with clerical support, do data entry, research topics, or organize materials.

Volunteers and visitor at the library registration deskLearn about researchers' projects and trigger your own fact-finding missions. Each year thousands of researchers visit the reference library in search of genealogical or other historical topics.

Library registration desk volunteers welcome and register partons and provide guidlines for library use. Customer service skills and keyboarding experience required.

Procedure manuals, data bases and filing--oh my!

Volunteer filing photographsExpert organizers manage information and communications. Learn about behind-the-scenes activities managing the flow of information and documentation. Become an essential part of a dynamic team. Individualized training provided.

Required: Speed, accuracy and attention to detail. Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel and keyboarding skills of 30+ wpm a plus.

Provide a warm welcome and valuable information

Volunteer greeting visitors

Greeters are a one-stop shop able to provide information on a wide variety of topics. Visitors can ask them about membership benefits, where to go find information about ancestors and the day's special activities. You'll be "in the know" as a visitor services greeter.

Commit to weekly half-day shifts one year. Training provided.

 

 

Get energized welcoming groups

In a high energy environment, school programs greeters work with children, teachers and chaperones to give them a positive field trip experience. They greet and direct groups, and advise bus drivers of parking.

Volunteers in this role gain a familiarity with Minnesota's history, the Minnesota Historical Society and the History Center or Mill City Musem.

Commit to one day per week, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., October - June. Currently filled to capacity. Please check again.

 

Make first and lasting impressions

Must-see information and visit recaps are often exchanged at the coat check counter. If you enjoy chatting with the public, this is the spot for you!

Volunteers corral coats, mittens and hats, and generate revenue to support Society programs. Visitors strategize their plan for the day based on your suggestions. On departure, they may share visit highlights. As a coat check volunteer, you have the first opportunity to make visitors feel welcome and the last opportunity to invite them to return.

Volunteers are needed for weekday and/or weekend shifts during the busy holiday season. Flexible schedules are available and training are provided.

Must be friendly, organized and able to make change. Previous customer service experience a plus!

Make museums fun

Join the team of museum assistants who facilitate hands-on learning activities for young visitors. You'll learn about exhibits and then share that information with visitors of all ages--especially children!

Four-hour shifts. Commit to one weekday shift each week for six months. This is an active, on-your-feet role in a high energy environment.

Maintain displays and provide great service

Share smiles and provide excellent customer service to shoppers in the midst of hundreds of intriguing items. Restock and maintain displays or bag purchases.

Store volunteers work 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. one day per week on weekdays or weekends. Volunteers receive discounts on their purchases!

Volunteer from home

Data entry skills are needed for an on-going virtual volunteer opportunity. In this role you'll assist program staff with the compilation of evaluation data to aid future program planning.

Enter information from hard copies into a web-based program while working from home. You must have access to a computer and an Internet connection.

Two - ten hours per month depending on program need. One year commitment preferred.
