State Archives Inventory Notebooks

These notebooks contain more detailed descriptions of the records for each state agency or local government unit in the State Archives collections. There is one set for state agencies and another for local government units.

State agencies notebooks are organized alphabetically using the common form of the agency name (e.g. Conservation Department, not Minnesota Department of Conservation).

Local government notebooks are arranged by county name. Within each, records are organized by local jurisdictions, in the following order: county agencies; courts (including district, probate, justice, family and county); townships, villages and cities; school districts; and superintendent of schools.

Notebook entries include (as appropriate): agency history; summary of collection's scope and content; narrative description of collection; contents of individual boxes, folders, volumes, or film rolls; information on provenance and/or restrictions; and lists of author entries and subject headings.

Consult library staff for help in locating the correct notebook.
