Americans, led by Herbert Hoover, launched massive relief efforts during World War I. Many efforts carried over into the post-war years, like the emergence of the American Legion, to care for veterans in large numbers, and the Red Cross, which mobilized in Europe during the war and again in the U.S. against the influenza pandemic. Phil Hansen of the Minnesota Red Cross and Al Zdon of the Minnesota American Legion will provide a local context for this national story.
Forgotten Stories is a new series that brings together nationally known historians to explore forgotten WW1-era stories of the individuals and organizations who made modern America. Look for additional lectures offered each month through November.
This program is made possible by the Fred C. and Katherine B. Andersen Foundation.
