Listen to a presentation from Minneapolis basketry artist Martha Bird on the impact of social stigma on creative expression. Bird draws on her personal experiences and contemporary research to challenge everyday references that are often dismissed but help perpetuate negative stereotypes. By working through social stigma, Bird will show how raising awareness of and naming problems can help us achieve our creative potential.

Martha Bird is a self-taught, Minneapolis-based, multidisciplinary artist who specializes in traditional and sculptural basketry. She has a master’s degree in holistic nursing and weaves together her basketry with healing in body, mind, and soul to invite wholeness in both the work and in herself. Bird has exhibited with the National Basketry Organization, Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Textile Center, and Avivo ArtWorks.
