Join John Zasada, a retired U.S. Forest Service silviculturist and renowned birch bark artisan, to learn about the basswood tree. Zasada will provide an introduction to this tree that is often undervalued and underutilized and reveal some of its historic and current uses, such as in the production of honey, syrup, and tea or using the wood to manufacture oars, paddles, and construction shims. Woodcarvers have long sought to work with basswood because of its relative softness and clear grain.

There will be a 30-minute introduction, two hours of field exploration, and one hour in the workshop to learn how to separate the inner and outer bark for craft purposes.
