- The Department of Veterans' Affairs has completed work on its online Nationwide Gravesite Locator, which contains 3.2 million records for veterans for 120 national cemeteries going back to the Civil War. The database also contains records for some state veterans cemeteries and burials in Arlington National Cemetery since 1999. The records, which previously were stored as paper and microfilm, are searchable for free. The record includes names, dates of birth and death, dates of military service, service branch and military rank, cemetery information, and grave marker location in the cemetery. Cemeteries will withhold certain information by request for privacy purposes.
