Find out how the history of American populism—which first arose in the 19th century to take on the power of corporations and banks, and wrestle with racial conflicts in the South—offers a rich context for understanding contemporary struggles over democracy and voting rights in the United States. Kevin Gaines, Julian Bond Professor of Civil Rights and Social Justice at the University of Virginia, will present on these issues.

Kevin Gaines is a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians.

The History Forum series unpacks the history behind today’s headlines. Join six national scholars of American history as they explore the history that helps us understand and unravel the issues we face right now. Attend, engage, and draw your own conclusions.
