The late Minnesota Governor Elmer L. Andersen served as the Society’s president from 1966 to 1970. He left us these thoughtful words, “There is no question that the values that built our past are essential to our future. But we cannot assume they will be automatically adopted by future generations. The Minnesota Historical Society is a vital factor in preserving the best of the past and projecting it into the future.” Together, we can ensure that the Governor’s wisdom is carried forward.

Each year, 300,000 schoolchildren visit our historic sites and museums. They shoulder a musket at Historic Fort Snelling, see the legislature in action at the State Capitol, experience a tornado at the History Center, and step back in time at the Jeffers Petroglyphs where American Indians made rock carvings 5,000 years ago. Adults and families learn here too. We offer over 500 programs annually. Sign up for one or two or more at mnhs.org/calendar.

The Minnesota Historical Society’s state-funded services cost each Minnesota citizen just $4.23 per year – a bargain any way you look at it. That same amount will get you a five-pound sack of Pillsbury flour or a twin-pack of Old Dutch potato chips. In return, you get: 25 sites and museums across the state, a world-class library loved by historians and genealogists, and everything on our expansive web site used by three million people each year. To help offset state funding cuts, the History Center Museum will begin charging an admission fee January 11, 2005. The Minnesota Historical Society Library remains free. Part of the admission will be used to extend hours at the museum and library. Visit mnhs.org/historycenter for hours.
