On the cutting edge
Lester Sword

View a rare Civil War sword acquired by the Society beginning May 27 at the History Center in St. Paul. Made by Tiffany and Company of New York, it features a silver wire-wrapped grip, an elaborately etched blade and gilded fittings.

The sword was presented to Colonel Henry C. Lester, a commanding officer of the Third Minnesota Regiment, on April 14, 1862, by his staff “in token of their high regard and confidence.” Lester’s reputation was sullied three months later in action against the notorious Confederate cavalry wizard Nathan Bedford Forrest. On July 13, 1862, Col. Lester surrendered to Forrest without a fight, and was subsequently dishonorably discharged.

Children at Fort Snelling

With 25 historic sites and museums to visit statewide, a gift membership to the Society is always a great idea. Whether at Mill City Museum, Historic Fort Snelling, the State Capitol or the Ramsey House, everyone from kids to grandparents will find something to spark their interest. Also, visit the Society's information booth at the Midwest Vintage Clothing, Jewelry & Textile Show (St. Paul RiverCentre, June 10 and 11) to purchase a Society membership for yourself or someone special. You'll also find four full ballrooms of vintage clothing, jewelry and textile dealers.

Preserve your family heirlooms

Cedar chests, plastic bins and adhesive-backed photo albums aren’t reliable for storage and preservation of your family treasures. As part of its Minnesota’s Greatest Generation Project, the Society now offers online advice for properly displaying, cleaning and storing your family’s history. Starting August 14 at the History Center, you can also attend preservation workshops, where you’ll receive preservation tips from experts as well as suggestions on how to start the process. Learn more about the Minnesota’s Greatest Generation Project.

Parting Shot
River Road Club in Mendota, 1955

“This 1955 image of the River Road Club in Mendota reveals so much,” says senior exhibit developer Benjamin Filene. “It shows the sheer energy that earned Augie Garcia the title of ‘godfather of Minnesota rock ‘n’ roll.’ It also shows that music sometimes integrated more easily than schools or neighborhoods (the saxophonist is James ‘Cornbread’ Harris, Jimmy Jam’s dad). And, it gives a glimpse of a hopping ballroom scene that has mostly faded away.” Browse more than 117,000 additional historic images.
