Society receives valuable Seth Eastman painting
Seth Eastman's painting, 'View of Mendota, 1848'

Renowned artist and 19th-century Fort Snelling commander Seth Eastman depicted the Minnesota frontier and American Indian life. See one of his paintings, "View of Mendota, 1848," now on display at the History Center. The painting – a view from Fort Snelling – portrays an American Indian family taking a panoramic look at one of Minnesota’s oldest territorial settlements.

Art curator Brian Szott says, "Determining the painting's value is difficult as it's truly invaluable to the Society. However, at recent auctions, Eastman paintings have sold for $120,000 to more than $900,000."

Buy books about Eastman's paintings online or at Historic Fort Snelling and the History Center.

Return train trip from fishing on Leech Lake

Photo curator Bonnie Wilson loves this shot of a train full of fish leaving the station in Walker, Minn., in 1896. "It reminds us of the bygone bounty of our lakes, changes in sporting attire and a time when train travel was central to recreation," she says. Browse more than 117,000 additional historic images.
