Mid-Size and Large Grant Recipients - Fall 2009 (FY2010)

The Minnesota Historical Society Awards Over $1.4 million in Mid-Size and Large Grants Funded by the Legacy Amendment

Twenty-seven organizations from 12 counties (map pdf) received $1,462,500 in grants for historic and cultural projects of enduring value.

The Minnesota Historical Society is helping to grant wishes to dozens of historic and cultural organizations across the state. The Society announced the first 27 recipients of Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Mid-Size and Large Grants for fiscal year 2010.

Each Historical and Cultural Grant project will preserve and enhance Minnesota’s cultural and historical resources.

Recipients of Mid-Size Grants

  • 1854 Treaty Authority (Tower) - to evaluate and survey archaeological resources by the Grand Portage and Bois Forte Tribal Historic Preservation Offices, $37,000.
  • Aeon (Saint Paul) - to repoint masonry work on the O'Donell Shoe Company Building, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, $50,000.
  • Afton Historical Society Press (Afton) - to publish the book "Pioneer Modernists" about Minnesota women making significant contributions to art in the early 20th century, $28,169.
  • City of Hibbing, Economic Development Authority - to produce a historic walking tour brochure, $2,250.
  • City of Minneapolis - to abate water infiltration in the lower levels of the Grain Belt Office Building, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, $50,000.
  • City of Mountain Iron - to increase public accessibility to Mountain Iron Mine National Historic Landmark, $48,000.
  • Dakota Wicohan (Granite Falls) - to conduct oral history interviews with the few remaining Dakota-as-a-first language speakers, $50,000.
  • Friends of B'nai Abraham (Virginia) - to repoint masonry and preserve windows of the B'nai Abraham Synagogue, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, $38,826.
  • Gunflint Trail Historical Society (Grand Marais) - to install an exhibit about life in the Gunflint Trail area, $25,000.
  • Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County (Moorhead) - to assist in acquiring and installing archival storage to better preserve significant evidence from the county's past, $10,688.
  • Listening Point Foundation (Ely) - to restore the masonry foundation facade, exterior steps, and interior fireplace hearth in the cabin at Listening Point, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, $10,900.
  • Richfield Historical Society (Richfield) - to prepare a comprehensive interpretive plan for better public access to Richfield history, $44,148.
  • Rockford Area Historical Society (Rockford) - to repair the roof of the Ames-Florida House, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, $18,880.
  • Saint Bonifacius Historical Society (Saint Bonifacius) - to provide public access to Cold War-era history through interpretation of a Nike-Hercules Missle, $14,000.
  • Science Museum of Minnesota (Saint Paul) - to make publicly accessible 1955 archaeological artifacts from the Ranelius Site, $21,100.
  • Sherburne County Historical Society (Becker) - to assist in acquiring and installing large functional object storage to better preserve significant evidence from the county's past, $22,400.
  • Three Rivers Park District (Plymouth) - to develop a cultural resource management plan for a suburban system of 20 parks and 10 trails, $39,072.
  • The Trust for Public Land (Kandiyohi) - to conduct a cultural resources assessment of a rural landscape containing a rare old growth elm forest, $9,000.
  • University of Minnesota–Duluth - to evaluate environmental systems of the university's museums preparatory to improving preservation conditions, $17,000.
  • University of Minnesota–Twin Cities, University Archives (Minneapolis) - to digitize the Norman Borlaug Papers and provide worldwide access, $27,667.

Recipients of Large Grants

  • City of Hewitt - to restore the roof and abate water infiltration to the Hewitt Public School, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, $156,369.
  • City of Thief River Falls - to stabilize the structure of and improve the environmental systems in the Thief River Falls Carnegie Library, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, $99,000.
  • Dakota County Historical Society (South Saint Paul) - to assist in acquiring and installing compact storage to better preserve significant evidence from the county's past, $75,000.
  • Emerge Community Development (Minneapolis) - to rehabilitate the North Branch Library, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, as a career and technology center, $150,000.
  • Minnesota Department of Transportation (Saint Paul) - to restore the WPA stonewall of the Cascade River Wayside (Grand Marais), listed in the National Register of Historic Places, $235,131.
  • Native American Community Development Institute (Minneapolis) - to produce a cross-disciplinary book-length manuscript on the history of land use by Dakota people in Minnesota prior to 1862, $107,900.
  • Stevens County Historical Society (Morris) - to assist in acquiring and installing compact storage to better preserve significant evidence from the county's past, $75,000.
