MINNESOTA HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL GRANTS - Awards

Small Grant Recipients - November 2009

Thirty-two organizations from 21 counties (map pdf) received a total of $147,031 in grants for historic and cultural projects of enduring value in November, 2009.

Each Historical and Cultural Grant project will preserve and enhance Minnesota’s cultural and historical resources. The grant recipients for the November 2009 deadline of Small (Fast Track) Grants of $7,000 or less are:

  • Carver County Historical Society (Waconia) - improve security and storage for significant military artifacts, $5,800.
  • Cass Gilbert Society (Saint Paul) - broaden online historical content about Cass Gilbert projects, $6,100.
  • City of Minneapolis - determine the reuse of historic tunnels and drop shafts to produce hydrothermal energy for heating and cooling, $7,000.
  • Cokato Historical Society (Cokato) - create digital user copies of 817 8x10 glassplate negatives from the Gust Akerlund Photography Studio Collection, $4,494.
  • Czech and Slovak Sokol Minnesota (Saint Paul) - provide an engineering assessment of a property from 1887, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, $7,000.
  • Dassel Area Historical Society (Dassel) - broaden public accessibility to primary records by adding 17 rolls of microfilmed newspapers, $469.
  • Dorothy Molter Foundation and Museum (Ely) - broaden public accesibility through well-rounded interpretation by adding 19 standard Minnesota history titles, $581.
  • Friends of the History Museum of East Otter Tail County (Perham) - record 20 interviews with people who shaped events related to the Cold War in eastern Otter Tail County, $6,831.
  • Gilbert Public Library (Gilbert) - broaden public accessibility by adding 43 standard Minnesota history titles, $1,107.
  • Grassroots Culture (Saint Paul) - record 11 interviews with people who shaped bulegrass music in Minnesota, $5,870.
  • Hamline United Methodist Church (Saint Paul) - complete research and documentation of the Hamline United Methodist Church building with a professional historian, in preparation for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, $3,500.
  • Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County (Moorhead) - make primary records available through a new microfilm reader-printer, $5,962.
  • Hubbard County Public Works (Park Rapids) - develop a master interpretive plan for the Lake Country Scenic Byway, $7,000.
  • Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest (Minneapolis) - broaden public access to information through Placeography about places in Minnesota significant to Jewish history, $7,000.
  • Joseph R. Brown Heritage Center (Henderson), partnering with Minnesota's Heritage - create the initial issue of a scholarly journal, "Minnesota's Heritage," $5,060.
  • Marshall-Lyon County Library (Marshall) - broaden public accessibility by adding 27 standard Minnesota history titles, $608.
  • Mesabi Range College Library (Virginia) - broaden public accessibility by adding 40 standard Minnesota history titles, $1,136.
  • Mille Lacs County Historical Society (Princeton) - broaden public accessibility to primary records by adding 22 rolls of microfilmed newspapers, $660.
  • Minnesota Genealogical Society (South Saint Paul) - broaden public accessibility to primary records by adding 8 fiche and 96 rolls of microfilmed city directories, $6,971.
  • Minnesota Legislative Reference Library (Saint Paul) - augment current digital content by digitizing 817 audio cassettes of the 2004 Senate committee hearings, $4,076.
  • Minnesota Museum of Mining (Chisholm) - develop and research the overall storyline of the main exhibit hall depicting life on the Iron Range, 1920-1950, $7,000.
  • Nicollet County Historical Society (Saint Peter) - augment an award-winning exhibit with direct quotations from Dakota people to deepen public perspective on the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux, $750.
  • Roseau County Historical Society (Roseau) - record 13 interviews with Korean and Vietnam veterans from Roseau County, $2,468.
  • Scott County Historical Society (Shakopee) - prepare a book-length manuscript based on oral histories with World War II veterans from Scott county, $6,772.
  • Service League of the Hennepin County Medical Center (Minneapolis) - preserve approximately 1,700 prints and negatives documenting medical history, $988.
  • Sherburne County Historical Society (Becker) - improve collections care and management through proper storage, $2,650.
  • Stearns History Museum (Saint Cloud) - provide an engineering assessment of the museum's 1983 environmental systems, $4,610.
  • Three Rivers Park District (Shakopee) - gain intellectual and physical control over all objects in 25 buildings at The Landing and provide better access to them, $6,949.
  • Twin Cities Chapter of the American Red Cross (Minneapolis) - research and produce a small traveling exhibit about the contributions of women to the Red Cross in World War I, $6,986.
  • Upper Minnesota Valley Regional Development Commission (Appleton) - evaluate the U.S.-Dakota Conflict of 1862 story markers and propose additional stories, perspectives, and voices in preparation for the conflict's sesquicentennial, $6,980.
  • Washington County Library (Woodbury) - add 227 Minnesota history books to the Washington County Library System, $6,700.
  • Winona County Historical Society (Winona) - improve safety and the environment for historical artifacts by creating a separate exhibit fabrication area, $6,953.
