Forty-eight organizations from twenty-seven counties (map - pdf) received a total of $285,182 in grants Map of counties receiving Legacy grants in October 2011 for historic and cultural projects of enduring value.

Each Historical and Cultural Grant project will preserve and enhance Minnesota’s cultural and historical resources. The grant recipients for the October 2011 deadline of Small (Fast Track) Grants of $7,000 or less are:

1006 Summit Avenue Society (St. Paul) To prepare a comprehensive interpretive plan for the Governor's Residence to identify how best to reach their audience. $7,000.00

Bakken Museum (Minneapolis) To complete fabrication and installation of the Dakota Medicinal Plant Garden exhibit. $7,000.00

Beltrami County History Center (Bemidji) To rehouse a collection of historic photographs in order to better preserve them. $4,978.00

Blue Earth County Historical Society (Mankato) To prepare an educational series honoring the Dakota People during the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 Sesquicentennial. $7,000.00

Brown County Historical Society (New Ulm) To restore the brick walls, wood beams and wood floor; and re-purpose the pan lighting in an exhibit area. $6,350.00

Ce Tempoxcalli (St. Paul) To construct a historically accurate account and thorough context of the 1995 Hunger Strike. $7,000.00

Cedar Lake Park Preservation and Development Association dba Cedar Lake Park Association (Minneapolis) To publish a history of the Cedar Lake Park Association, a volunteer citizens' group. $7,000.00

City of Bigfork (BigFork) To prepare a comprehensive plan for the renovation and preservation of the Bigfork City Hall, eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. $7,000.00

City of Brooklyn Park (Brooklyn Park) To create trunks containing hands-on artifacts pertaining to Eidem Homestead and local history to be loaned to schools and other community groups. $7,000.00

City of Inver Grove Heights (Inver Grove Heights) To document in up to 12 interviews the history of the Rock Island Swing Bridge in preparation for an interpretive plan. $6,990.00

City of Onamia (Onamia) To abate water infiltration of the basement of the Onamia City Hall, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. $6,300.00

City of Rochester (Rochester) To compile a comprehensive baseline inventory that can be integrated in planning. $6,280.00

Cokato Historical Society (Cokato) To scan and digitize 1,400 significant glass plate negatives from the Gust Akerlund Studio collection. $7,000.00

Dakota County Historical Society (South St. Paul ) To develop a new website that enables better public access to Dakota County history. $6,900.00

Freeborn County (Albert Lea) To purchase 81 rolls of microfilmed newspapers from bordering communities that include Freeborn County history. $2,830.00

Freeborn County Historical Society (Albert Lea) To create and install an interpretive marker on the history of Lodge Zare Zapadu No. 44, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. $4,409.00

Grant County (Elbow Lake) To prepare condition report and treatment proposal for the Grant County Courthouse, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. $6,950.00

Hennepin History Museum (Minneapolis) To document in 10 interviews the history of Bhutanese refugees in Minnesota. $7,000.00

Hennepin Medical History Center (Minneapolis) To develop a new website that enables better public access to Hennepin Medical Center history. $4,000.00

Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County (Moorhead) To hire a consultant to research and design a new exhibit about the Hjemkomst voyage. $6,000.00

Hormel Historic Home (Austin ) To survey educators and assess local needs for on-site or classroom education units. $5,620.00

Isanti County Historical Society (Cambridge) To clean, catalog and file fire-damaged materials to enhance public access to Isanti County history. $6,570.00

Jefferson Township (Eitzen) To edit a manuscript on the history of the Winnebago Creek Valley, Jefferson Township, Houston County. $2,000.00

Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest (Minneapolis) To create 15 entries about Minnesota's Jewish institutions using text, photos and videos from the collections of JHSUM for MNopedia. $6,660.00

Lake Street Council (Minneapolis) To install three bi-lingual heritage discovery walks along Lake Street in Minneapolis. $7,000.00

Lanesboro Arts Center (Lanesboro) To survey the exterior of the building, make historically sensitive recommendations, and create construction-ready documents for needed improvements that will enhance the exterior of the historic building without negatively impacting the historic structure. $6,075.00

Maplewood Area Historical Society (Maplewood) To conduct research on the comprehensive history of Maplewood from the 1850s to present. $6,745.00

Minnesota State University, Mankato - Library Services (Mankato) To digitize and make accessible the Minnesota State University, Mankato school newspaper, 1926-1975. $7,000.00

Minnesota Veterinary Historical Museum (Saint Paul) To create and install an exhibit on the history of veterinary medicine in Minnesota. $3,105.00

Mower County Historical Society (Austin) To create and install an exhibit on the ghost towns of Mower County. $7,000.00

Nicollet County Historical Society (St. Peter) To provide greater accessibility to, and use of, the NCHS microfilm research collection. $6,999.00

Nicollet County Historical Society (St. Peter) To document a public series of native and non-native lecturers discussing Dakota culture, relationship with the US government, and the 1862 Dakota War. $4,000.00

North Star Foundation of the Mesaba Range Incorporated (Hibbing) To document in 10 interviews the history of Mesaba Co-op Park and related cooperative movement history. $4,700.00

Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State (Civil War Commemoration Task Force) (St. Paul) To enable public access through a website on the Minnesota Civil War Sesquicentennial. $7,000.00

Performance Lab, The (St. Paul) To document in 3 to 4 interviews the history of the dance community in the Twin Cities. $6,650.00

Pipestone County Historical Society (Pipestone) To create a 40-page walking tour booklet and integrated web assets of Pipestone Commercial Historic District, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. $4,376.00

Redwood Falls Public Library (Redwood Falls) To purchase 128 rolls of microfilmed newspapers from Redwood County. $6,960.00

Regents of the University of Minnesota (Institute for Advanced Study) (Minneapolis) To document in 20 interviews the history of growing and marketing food in southwest Minnesota. $6,900.00

Renville County Historical Society (Morton) To add 35 standard Minnesota history titles to broaden public accessibility. $1,019.00

Saint John's Abbey & University (Collegeville) To undertake a general preservation needs assessment of library collections at Saint John's University. $6,046.00 Saint Paul Domestic Abuse Intervention Project (Saint Paul) To document in 5 to 7 interviews the many roles advocates play in helping victims to become successful survivors and helping to move society toward the elimination of abuse altogether. $7,000.00

Seward Neighborhood Group (Minneapolis) To produce a book-length manuscript on the history of the Seward Neighborhood, Minneapolis. $6,850.00

St. Louis County Historical Society (Duluth) To produce construction documents for a gallery and adjacent museum storage to preserve Eastman Johnson art works and Ojibwe artifacts. $7,000.00

Twin Cities Daily Planet (Minneapolis) To compile source materials about theater history throughout the state of Minnesota from 1959 to 1981. $5,625.00 University of Minnesota Foundation (University of Minnesota Press) Minneapolis To publish a book tracing Minnesota railroading over the last seven decades through carefully selected photographs, maps, and ephemera. $7,000.00

Wabasha County Historical Society (Lake City) To mitigate the risk of fire in the Reads Landing School, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. $4,920.00

White Earth Reservation Tribal Council (White Earth) To document the spiritual and cultural implications associated with the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) and Numa the Lake Sturgeon in up to 15 interviews. $3,189.00

Winona State University (Winona) To conduct a general survey of the university collections; assess interior environments, policies and procedures for the use and care of collections; and produce a long-range preservation plan. $6,186.00
