INTERLIBRARY LOAN

The Minnesota Historical Society participates in Interlibrary Loan (ILL) on a limited basis as the collections are considered to be reference material. Books are loaned very selectively, usually only if duplicate or microfilm copies exist, as they are in great demand by regular patrons in the Library.

Materials not available for loan include death certificates, birth certificates, genealogies, serials, dissertations, and audio-visual materials. The Reserve Collection of rare books may not be loaned or photocopied.

The Library does make most of its microfilm holdings available through inter-library loan. These include:

  • Almost all Minnesota newspapers
  • State Archives collections, such as naturalization records, Minnesota State censuses, and county tax rolls.
  • Some manuscript collections, including portions of our railroad holdings.

Subject lists of microfilm that are available may be requested from the Library at (651) 259-3300.

Interlibrary loan service is available to all researchers. The loan period is 3 weeks from the date of receipt of the request, with 2-week renewals for newspaper and manuscript microfilm only. Researchers must request items through their local academic or public library, or other ALA/OCLC/ILL participant. There is a loan fee of $3.00 per roll plus $2.50 postage and handling, with a maximum of six rolls of microfilm per order.

For copies from material that cannot be loaned, such as books and magazines, refer to Copy Services.
