Return to the Table of Contents BIOGRAPHY OF MARGUERITE GUINOTTEMarguerite Guinotte was born March 19, 1882 in Neuilly, France, the daughter of Alfred and Laure (Le Hardy, 1844-1937) Guinotte. She was named for Margaret Lesley Bush-Brown (sister of Mary Lesley Ames). She arrived in St. Paul in 1907 to teach French at the Miss Loomis School. She later taught at the Northrop Collegiate School in Minneapolis before joining the University of Minnesota faculty in 1913. Her father was a writer in France. From evidence in the papers it appears that the family lived in Montana and Florida when Marguerite and her brother John were small and later returned to France. After Marguerite came to St. Paul both parents emigrated to the United States and also lived in St. Paul, although Alfred later returned to France where he died around 1915. Laure Guinotte lived with her daughter and died in 1937. Marguerite Guinotte retired from the University in 1950 and died July 13, 1961. Return to the Table of Contents SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE PAPERSThe letters are to Guinotte with one folder of letters (1923-1934) from her cousin Berthe to Guinotte's mother Laure. Many are in French. Many of the 1922-1950 letters are from John Guinotte, who advises her on financial affairs and comments frequently on political matters both in the United States and France. It is presumed that the letters from French relatives discuss their lives and activities in France. Other correspondents include members of the Charles W. Ames family (1907-1918). Marguerite traveled to France in 1938 and 1949. During World War II, and thereafter, there are no letters from Europe. Later, Marguerite sent packages to relatives in Brussels and France.
