SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION

Biographical information, correspondence, financial and fund raising materials, polls and questionnaires, research files, news releases, clippings, and magazine articles, campaign literature, schedules, and audio and video tapes compiled by George Latimer as mayor of St. Paul, Minnesota (1977-1989). They document his mayoral campaigns (1977-1987), his brief campaign for governor of Minnesota (1986), and two proposed campaigns: for U. S. Senate (1984) and for governor of Minnesota (1990). In 1990 Latimer was appointed dean of the Hamline University Law School.

Mayoral campaign records are mainly financial, including documentation of fund raising events. Also included are materials on other mayoral candidates. Fairly extensive records document Latimer's campaign for governor in 1986. there are a few records documenting the 1988 presidential campaign, in which Latimer was an early supporter of Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis.

The records of "The Saint Paul Experiment: A Study of St. Paul Government," a project undertaken by Professor David Lanegran and students from Macalester College (St. Paul), are also found in the papers. Included are typed transcripts of interviews between the students and Mayor Latimer and other city officials, drafts of articles by the students and background materials on the project and on St. Paul city government.

The collection contains a complete set of the mayor's daily schedule sheets (1981-1987); his appointment books (1976-1982, 1984); and numerous audio and video tapes including campaign ads and speeches and Latimer's appearances on local and national radio and television.
