BIOGRAPHY OF MAGNUS WEFALD

Knut Magnus Wefald was born in Hawley, Minnesota (April 21, 1900), the first son of Norwegian immigrants Knud and Sarah Wefald. He graduated from Hawley High School in 1918 and from St. Olaf College (Northfield, Minn.) in 1923. At St. Olaf he met his future wife, Verna Ellingson, whom he married in 1924.

Wefald served (1923-1927) as secretary to his father, Congressman Knud Wefald, while attending George Washington Law School. When his father was defeated in 1926 Wefald remained in Washington, working as a sales and collection correspondent for the National Radio Institute while finishing law school. Upon his graduation from law school in 1929, Wefald moved his family (now 3 children: Knut, Harold, and Martin) to Hawley and opened his own law practice. His only daughter, Marguerite, was born there in 1934.

Wefald was elected Mayor of Hawley in 1935 and later served as the village attorney (1931-1974). In 1936 he was appointed to the Minnesota State Board of Law Examiners, serving until 1944. In 1938 Wefald bought a farm which later became known as the Wefald Sheep Ranch and Wefald Galloway Farm. Although he seldom participated in the actual farm labor, Wefald took a great interest in its operation, maintaining detailed records on every aspect and keeping abreast of current agricultural trends.

Wefald defeated longtime Clay County attorney James Garrity in 1946 for a state senate seat. During his twelve years in the senate Wefald was chairman of the reapportionment and public institutions committees and a member of the retirement commission, state building commission, and a commission to study the practice of osteopathy. After being defeated in 1958 he returned to his Hawley law practice.

In 1972, former Hawley resident Eva Mackintosh persuaded Wefald and his wife to visit her new home in South Africa. After their trip Wefald composed a detailed diary of the experience.

By the late 1970s Wefald decided to take in a partner at the law firm so the he could gradually ease into retirement. Zenas Baer officially entered into the practice as a partner in 1979, allowing Wefald to retire in 1983. Wefald then devoted his retirement years to preserving his family heritage by financing the publication of his father's poetry and actively campaigning for the construction of the Knud Wefald Memorial in Decorah, Iowa. Wefald died at St. John's Hospital in Fargo (N.D.) on February 9, 1991.

Biographical data was taken from the papers.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION

Personal correspondence and subject files contain extensive communications with parents, children, other family members, and friends, as well as documenting his involvement in several historical and Norwegian organizations. Materials documenting Wefald's 54-year law practice include daily time sheets (1936-1991), client case files and income tax records, business correspondence, and files relating to his participation in bar associations. The case files cover such topics as divorce, land disputes, guardianship, and income taxes; some span more than 20 years.

Farm records record in detail the operation of Wefald's sheep ranch (1938-1948) and his Galloway cattle farm (1948-1969). They include records of cattle sold, crop acreage maps, correspondence with farm hands and government agencies, and detailed equipment inventories. Accounting records document both law practice and farms and include daybooks, general ledgers, annual balance sheets, and tax returns. Legislative files document his work on the reapportionment and public institutions committees, state retirement commission, state building commission, and an osteopathy study commission. Other files relate to his service (1936-1944) on the State Board of Law Examiners.

Subject Files:
Wefald preserved a large amount of personal correspondence (boxes 3-15), making this collection a fairly complete record of his life. The files in this section are organized into four broad segments: personal subject files (boxes 3-8), files relating to historical and Norwegian organizations in which Wefald was involved (Box 8), family correspondence (boxes 8-14), and political files (box 15). Wefald managed to keep in close contact with his family and friends and, in most cases, two-way communication is present. Wefald dictated the majority of his correspondence and kept the carbons.
The extensive personal subject files document nearly all aspects of Wefald's life, including his personal finances, real property, insurance, and activities and hobbies.
There is a great deal of correspondence relating to Wefald's years spent away from Hawley, first while attending St. Olaf College and, later, while in Washington, D.C. attending law school. Letters to and from his children are very rich in content since they traveled extensively and this was their major form of communication.
Knut, Wefald's oldest son, served in the navy during World War II aboard the destroyer USS Coglan in the South Pacific. He and his family later spent time in Canada (1950s), Germany (early 1960s), and Sweden (mid-1970s) while he worked as an engineer on special assignments for his employer, Honeywell.
Harold, the second son, enlisted in the navy, but was quickly discharged so that he could join the Coast Guard and attend the Coast Guard Academy. He was subsequently discharged from the Coast Guard as well, due to a minor medical anomaly discovered after he had been at the academy for some months. He was later drafted into the army where he spent one and a half years in the army of occupation in Japan. He met his wife Emile, a Chinese student from Shanghai, while attending the University of Minnesota (he also attended the University of New Mexico) when he sought out native Chinese students in order to practice conversation in Chinese, which he was studying on a self-teaching basis. Magnus Wefald himself did not meet Emile for several years after the marriage, but they conversed frequently through letters.
Martin, the youngest son, began a brief career as a merchant seaman when he took a job on a Great Lakes ore boat immediately after graduating from high school. He spent the next ten years alternating between studying mathematics at the University of Minnesota and working as a merchant seaman. Upon graduating from the university, he settled in San Francisco where he married, raised his family, and worked as a software programmer for the U.S. Forest Service.
Marguerite, the youngest of the Wefald children, remained closer to home, briefly attending St. Olaf College and then the University of Minnesota, from which she graduated. She married and settled in Little Falls before moving on to Nebraska and, finally, Arizona. All four children wrote extensively to their parents, exchanging not only personal anecdotes but touching on societal issues as well.
The personal correspondence also reveals Wefald's relationship with his mother, father, and siblings. After his father's death, Wefald assumed a guardianship role, supporting his mother financially while she lived in California with his sisters.

Wefald Law Firm

Law Practice (Boxes 15-63): the law practice records consist of five main series: daily time sheets, client case files, client income tax returns, village attorney files, and business correspondence. The daily time sheets(1936-1991) provide a detailed calendar of Wefald's movements throughout each day. They were used mostly to keep track of client billing but in later years, especially after his retirement, they serve as a sort of shorthand diary.
Wefald's client case files cover issues of divorce, land disputes, and guardianship and include client correspondence, court documents, and notes by Wefald.
Most of Wefald's clientele were common folk: small merchants and farmers. In addition to the legal case work, Wefald also prepared income tax returns for clients. In some cases, runs of 20 years or more are present, giving a glimpse into economic conditions in Hawley and the surrounding area.
During Wefald's years as Hawley village attorney he dealt with such issues as city ordinances, zoning laws, suits against the city, and easements.

Wefald Farm

Farm Records (Boxes 64-74): a great amount of detail is found in this section. Although Wefald did not actively participate in farm labor, he did provide the financial backing as well as maintain managerial control. Maps outlining crop acreage, records of cattle breeding, and detailed equipment inventories are included. Also, records of cattle sold, soil conservation practices, cattle performance analyses, and cattle catalogs charting the growth of the herd are present.

Financial Files

Financial Records (Boxes 75-84): the financial files consist of three main sections: annual balance sheets and income tax returns, account books, and card packets. The balance sheets (1932-1990) consist of yearly income and expense statements as well as inventories and depreciation tables covering the law firm, farm, and personal finances. The account books are primarily chronological in format and show daily expenses and income. The card packets record the same type of information, but are arranged by accounts.
