SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION

Organizational records, and records of constituent chapters, from the council which served as one of the five "national" state offices. The council began as the state chapter and then became the North Midwest Regional Office of the National Audubon Society around 1975.

Boxes 1-5 consist largely of outgoing correspondence files of the following officials: Executive Director, Edward M. Mrigham (1982-1985), Regional Representative, Carol M. Beim Nulsen (1982-1987), Regional Office Manager-Camp Registrar, Julie C. Francis McGuigan (1983-1989), Minnesota Audubon Representative, Thomas P. McGuigan (1986-1989).

The correspondence contains information on all aspects of the council's work, including routine matters relating to chapter business and state and national legislation on conservation matters, with emphasis on wetland preservation, hazardous waste disposal, the Garrison Water Diversion Project on the Missouri River, and other construction projects detrimental to wildlife preservation.

Boxes 5-6 contain records of Minnesota Chapter and affiliates. Minutes and seminar files created by the Northwoods Audubon Center, Sandstone, Minnesota (1982-1990) document trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and the Apostle Islands, among other things. Individual files on the ten active Minnesota chapters (1969-1990) include correspondence, annual reports, and some newsletters. There are similar files for four inactive Minnesota chapters (1974-1986).

Box 7 contains a small group of the Wisconsin Audubon Council records (1983-1991) including constitution and bylaws, minutes, correspondence, and newsletters. The records reveal the close relationship between the Minnesota and Wisconsin councils.
