BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Robert Tennessen was born August 24, 1939 in Lismore, Minnesota. After
serving in the U.S. Air Force (1957-1961), he attended the University of
Minnesota, graduating with a B.A. (economics, 1965) and a law degree (1968). He
was elected to the Minnesota Legislature in 1970 as a Democratic-Farmer-Labor
senator from Minneapolis district 56. Tennessen served on the Commerce (chair),
Finance, Judiciary, and Rules and Administration committees, and chaired the
Judiciary subcommittee on Privacy Rights of Individuals, for which work he was
best known. Tennessen retired from the legislature at the end of the 1982
legislative session.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
Legislative files cover all aspects of legislation in which Tennessen
was involved, with emphasis on the Minnesota Constitutional Study Commission
and privacy legislation. Minutes and financial records of the Washington
Federal Savings Bank contain information on the institution's financial
problems that ultimately resulted in its liquidation. Also included are monthly
financial reports (1987-1988) of the related Washington Service Corporation.
Minutes, financial records, and property files document Tennessen's tenure on
the finance council of the Basilica of St. Mary, Minneapolis.
Tennessen's tenure on the board of Groves Learning Center, a private,
special education school for children with various learning disabilities, is
documented by minutes and related materials, annual reports, correspondence,
and other records.

Groves Learning Center:
Tennessen served on the board of trustees of this private
special education school for children with learning problems of many different
sorts. The files largely document his tenure as board chair. Incorporated in
1972, the Learning Center comprises several entities: Groves Academy (a day
school for grades 1-12), Diagnostic Center, Summer School, Tutorial Program,
Community Outreach, and Stepping Stones (preschool and kindergarten). Located
originally in Minnetonka, the institution moved to St. Louis Park in 1982.
