C. K. (Cornelius Knute) Orton was born (October 11, 1846) in LaCrosse,
Wisconsin, moved to Iowa (1853), and then to Lanesboro, Minnesota (1857) where
he was a bookkeeper and merchant. In 1872 he moved to Big Stone County and
homesteaded with his brothers near Big Stone Lake, where he also operated an
Indian trading post. The village of Ortonville was named for him and he served
as its first postmaster (1875), village officer (1881), and owner and operator
of Orton's Bank. Orton died in Ortonville on December 24, 1890.
