A daybook (1855-1859), cash books (1883-1890), general ledgers (1883-1890), and a purchase ledger (1937-1955), all apparently kept by St. Paul (Minn.) butcher John A. McAuley and by other family members. McAuley was a butcher, a butcher shop owner, or otherwise involved in the meat business in St. Paul from around 1882 until at least the early 1900s. 1.0 cu. ft. (1 box, containing 6 v.). See Detailed Description for shelf location. SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE PAPERS

The cash books and general ledgers (1883-1890) document the basic financial transactions of at least three meat proprietorships in which McAuley was sole owner or a partner, usually with one or more McAuley family members. The daybook was probably kept by an earlier family member, and the purchase ledger was kept by a butcher named A. B. McAuley, probably a relative.

The volumes provide names of butcher shop customers and suppliers, information on the costs of live and dressed meats and other food products, and on the retail prices charged for such products.
