The
Minnesota Historical Society holds the historical corporate records of the St.
Paul-based Great Northern Railway, its predecessors, and its subsidiaries and
affiliates. The collection documents its operations across the northern tier of
western states for more than one hundred years, until its 1970 merger with the
Northern Pacific, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, and the Spokane, Portland
and Seattle that formed the Burlington Northern. The voluminous collection
measures approximately 4,900 cubic feet in size.
Records
include minutes, reports, correspondence and subject files, financial and
accounting records, photographs, engineering drawings, land records,
engineering and valuation records, advertising literature, timetables,
publications, and many other materials documenting the principal staff and
operating departments. Those include the offices of the president, secretary,
treasurer, and comptroller; the law and land departments; mechanical and chief
engineers; public relations and personnel officers; and managers responsible
for rail operations.
Of
special importance are the President's Office subject files, comprising 1,000
feet of executive correspondence, reports, statistical data, maps, drawings,
and printed matter compiled to keep top officials informed on important current
and past activities. They provide the best summary available of the company's
experience over time.
In
addition to the "main line" materials are records of more than 300
branch lines, subsidiaries, and related companies. They include rail and
highway transport, oil and mineral, land and townsite, power, irrigation,
steamship, lumbering, and stockholding firms dispersed geographically from the
Great Lakes to Puget Sound.
The
text below gives very general descriptions of the scope and content of the
records from each principal GN department.
More detailed finding aids describing the many individual series of
records that comprise each department are available in the repository. These detailed finding aids are not yet
available in electronic form. Please
consult the MHS Reference Department (reference@mnhs.org) for more information about
the collection.
In
several series, organized by record type.
Records
created or compiled by the GN administrative unit responsible for managing
corporate advertising and public relations work.
Correspondence
and subject files (1924-1973) contain much information on advertising in all
media, on promotional events, on public relations events and programs, on the
history of towns and other places along the GN line, and on photographic
documentation efforts, especially relating to Glacier National Park. Microfilm
copies of magazine and newspaper advertisements (1884-1970) are concerned with
passenger and freight service, as well as with promoting western tourism. A
fairly complete run of advertising samples and literature (1912-1970) document
both the company and the advertising industry. Several series of photographs
(1910-1969) compiled by corporate photographers depict western scenery,
especially Glacier National Park, GN trains and rolling stock, and other
corporate properties.
Other
records include employee and public timetables and freight schedules
(1900-1969), runs of several corporate periodicals (1924-1970), press kits
(1947-1956) from numerous media events, and miscellaneous departmental
administrative files.

dispositions. Miscellaneous advertising materials (1890-1910) show techniques
used to lure settlers and to sell land parcels. Many of the records were
originally created by the GN's predecessor, the St. Paul, Minneapolis &
Manitoba Railway, and record the disposition of its granted lands in Minnesota
(swamp land grants) and North Dakota.

activities of its law department.
The
printed court case reports include published court documents from significant
state and federal cases in which GN was plaintiff, defendant, or appellant. The
most voluminous documentation comes from a federal case (1909-1911) that sought
to value GN properties and arrive at a "fair rate of return" in
setting rates.
Case
files come from the Seattle office and document the body of case work
originating in the west end, including the substantive California Extension
case (1923-1933), by which GN petitioned the ICC to permit a link with the
Western Pacific Railroad in northern California. Extensive files document the
Seattle office's role in planning and defending the proposed merger that
eventually (1970) resulted in Burlington Northern Inc.

GN administrative department responsible for operating the physical properties
of the Great Northern railway system.

several series of subject files from the office of the vice president-operating
document most phases of the day-to-day operation of the railway. They include
information on labor relations with train and track crews and other operating
employees, including wage matters; maintenance and purchase of rolling stock,

(1946-1968), notes and manuscripts on GN history, and other materials created
by the GN president's office.
The
files, dominated by correspondence, provide substantive documentation of all
phases of the company's organization, financing, and operations throughout its
existence. They provide a complete record of the activities of the entire
succession of GN presidents beginning with corporate founder James J. Hill. Of
particular significance are the presidents' subject files (1891-1970, 1,000 cu.
ft., indexed), which comprise a topically organized distillation of all matters
in which the executive officers were interested.
Among
the records are the research notes and manuscripts created (1950s-1960s) by

operated businesses on GN property, and improvements made to its right-of-way.
They also give much information on the valuation of the properties and on their
taxation by the various state and local units of government through which the

In
approximately 300 series, arranged alphabetically by company name.
The
Great Northern railway system included not only the parent corporation, but
also more than 300 branch lines and subsidiary companies that it either wholly
or partly owned. Many were owned and
operated jointly by the by NP and GN.
While
the majority of these companies are branch railroads, a large number represent
a surprising variety of industries.
There are such non-railroad transportation firms as steamship, motor
truck, bus, and aviation. There are
firms in extractive industries, such as logging and lumbering, coal and iron
mining, and oil and gas. There are
tourism and guest service companies, especially those connected with Glacier
national park. There are also financial
and stockholding companies, as well as many real estate development companies.
The
records of many of these subsidiaries consist of only a few folders, while some
exceed one hundred cubic feet. There
are separate finding aids for each of the 300 companies. They are filed alphabetically, by company
name, in inventory notebooks adjacent to the notebooks for their parent
company.
