HISTORY OF THE GARDEN CLUB OF
RAMSEY COUNTY
The Garden Club of Ramsey County was organized in April 1912 and is
the oldest continously operated garden club in Minnesota. Its original name was
the Men's Garden Club of Ramsey County and it was not until 1919 that women
were allowed to attend meetings as guests. Women were granted full membership
in 1932.
The objectives of the club are to stimulate the knowledge and love of
horticulture, floriculture, landscape and vegetable gardening among amateurs;
aid in the protection of native plants and trees; and encourage civic planting.
The club is affiliated with the Minnesota State Horticultural Society.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
This collection includes the records of a garden club located in St.
Paul, Minnesota. The minutes are widely scattered for the first thirty years of
the club and contain a mixture of board of directors, regular membership, and
annual meeting minutes thereafter. Membership directories contain a roster of
members, list of past presidents, bylaws, budgets, and events schedules for
that particular year. Minutes and newsletters of the Minnesota State
Horticultural Society for the 1980s and 1990s are found in the events and
program files. There are several club histories in this collection and club
activities are further documented in the correspondence, committee reports,
newspaper clippings, and financial records. A number of photographs and slides
of members gardens (1991) also are included.
