The great majority of the personnel files indexed by the microfilm no longer exist. The Minnesota Historical Society holds only file nos. 1-1532 and 1680-1927. These files only pertain to employees hired during the 1890s.

A 3-ring binder comprising an alphabetical index to that fraction of the Great Northern personnel files that are preserved in the collections of the Minnesota Historical Society. The 35-page loose-leaf index records the following information elements for each index entry: last name, first name, box location and box number, and personnel file number.

The index was prepared in 2005 by volunteers from the Irish Genealogical Society, International.

These records comprise the first group of numbered personnel files created by Great Northern during the first decade of its existence. The files document the hiring and service of early employees for whom files exist. File nos. 1533-1679 are missing, as are quite a few others. There are no individual personnel records for Great Northern Railway greater than personnel file number 1927. They were destroyed by the railroad.
