published by Columbia University Press in 1992. The biography covers
Mondale's political life, beginning with his college years involvement
in Americans for Democratic Action, through his tenures as Minnesota
Attorney General, U.S. Senator and Vice President, past the 1984
presidential election, and ending just before he accepted the position
of U.S. ambassador to Japan. The final chapter poses an assessment of
Mondale's failures as challenges left to the Democratic party for
resolution in the 1990s. The drafts include Mondale's handwritten review
comments prior to the final published edition. A copy of the published

<p>The Mondale Family Papers contain biographical information on both Walter
Mondale and Joan Adams Mondale as well as genealogical information dating
back to 1824 on the Mondale family and information dating back to 1850
regarding the Cowan family. Correspondence (1927-1961) of several
Mondale family members and annual Christmas cards (1947-1965) written by
Mondale's mother, Claribel (Cowan) Mondale, contain additional and scattered
genealogical information. Two pamphlets included within the family papers
provide brief histories of Bricelyn, Minnesota and the Bethany Evangelical
Lutheran Church of Frost, Minnesota. The Bricelyn history adds to
genealogical information regarding the Minnesota lineage of the Mondale
family and the church history contributes information regarding Mondale's
father, Theodore Sigurd Mondale, a Methodist minister. Included within the family
papers are passports, photographs, some scrapbook clippings, and a photocopy
of the will of Eleanor M. Archer, Mondale's half-sister.</p>

                <scopecontent>
<p>The Mondale family papers include several folders containing portraits of the
Cowan family, Fredrick Mundale, Ole Mondale, the Theodore Sigurd Mondale
family, and the Walter F. Mondale family. Also included with the family
papers are some snapshots of Mondale during his college and military years.
Included within these earlier photographs are two pictures of the family
house at 1004 N. Prairie in Fairmont, Minnesota and a set of snapshots from
a trip to the Quetico Superior lake region. Snapshots from a later period
depict Mondale enjoying several hunting and fishing trips. Photographs from
Mondale's post-vice presidential life include autographed portraits of
political associates and a set of prints documenting Mondale's appearance at
                        various meetings or speaking events.</p>

for the years 1981-1983, 1985-1990, and 1993. Separate daily logs for Mondale's legal and

March 1983. With June 1987 the records began to include lists of people

and the name <emph render="italic">May-dway-gwah-no-nind</emph> (One Who is
Spoken to) to be bestowed upon Mondale. The regalia was transferred to the
Minnesota Historical Society museum collections and researchers wishing to
view these pieces must contact the Museum. The file also includes a copy of

<!-- MSS CURATOR TO REVIEW THIS SERIES WITH MR. MONDALE

                <did>
                    <unittitle>Law Practice Files</unittitle>
                </did>
                <scopecontent>
<p>Includes a small file from 1980 of notes and memoranda exploring Mondale's
potential law partnerships. The rest of the papers from Mondale's law
practice are divided into two subsets: those regarding his 1981-1987
practice with the Washington office of the Chicago firm Winston &amp; Strawn
and those regarding his 1987-1993 practice with the Minneapolis firm of
Dorsey &amp; Whitney. As evidenced by the content of the files, Mondale's
primary purpose with both law firms was in the areas of legislation,
business development, and international relations. No papers from Mondale's
1956-1958 practice with the law firm of Larson, Loevinger, Lindquist,
Freeman and Fraser are evident nor are papers from his own partnership with
Harry McLaughlin in 1958-1960 evident within the collection.</p>
<p>Some materials pertaining to Mondale's practice with both firms are included
with his general Subject Files, 1978-1993, and researchers may want to
review these files as well as the law practice files. The general Subject
Files may include topics regarding company protocol such as the files on
Director/Officer Info, Arthur I. Gould, Retainer Agreements, or Trading in
Securities. The files may pertain to clients such as Columbia Pictures,
Control Data Corporation, Martineau Walker, and Overseas Development
Corporation. Or, the files may document one of Mondale's special
professional interests such as the files on the American Arbitration
Association or the Minnesota Chapter of the Organization of Chinese
                        Americans.</p>
                    <p>While both sets of law office files include client files, the Winston &amp;
Strawn files represent over 20 clients while Dorsey &amp; Whitney's files
pertain to only one client, though the Dorsey &amp; Whitney files contain
much more detail that do most of the Winston &amp; Strawn files.</p>
<p>Mondale's professional trips are arranged chronologically under each firm
name and form a major subset under each law practice. The files contain
briefing materials, business summaries, schedules, travel itineraries,
business and thank you correspondence, mailing and guest lists, news
clippings (some in Asian languages), and photographs. Information contained
within these files best documents Mondale's role in business development and
                        international relations. </p>

<p>The Winston &amp; Strawn client files, arranged alphabetically,
represent over 20 clients. The files are partly informational,
containing corporate reports, financial highlights, and product
brochures; information that would have familiarized Mondale with the
client base when he joined the firm in 1981. More substantial client
files exist for Beatrice Foods, Canadian Forest Industries Council,
Hydro-Quebec, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission/Tennessee Valley
Authority. These files contain more detailed correspondence and

clippings, and copies of case-relevant legislation. The information
in these more substantial files indicates why the firm was retained
and what legal services Mondale provided.</p>

<p>Winston &amp; Strawn had offices in Asia, and Mondale made trips to
China, Korea, and Japan in 1981, and again in 1986 to China and Hong
Kong. Mondale also made a total of three European trips for Winston
                                &amp; Strawn between 1981 and 1982.</p>
<p>With Winston &amp; Strawn, Mondale was able to blend his political
activities with the business ventures of the firm, promoting the
firm and its clients while maintaining a strong public image at the
same time. As these files demonstrate, separating the professional
aspect from the political aspect of Mondale's life is not an easy
matter. For example, in his May 1981 European trip, Mondale carried
out business for Winston &amp; Strawn in Paris and Zurich, but also
surveyed the damage in Italy as part of an earthquake disaster
relief committee. (For greater information about the relief

Earthquake Committee, 1981.) In late June through early July 1981,
Mondale travelled to London, Brussels, Bonn, and Tel Aviv. In part,
this trip was to tour NATO facilities as part of his political
re-education and to give a speech at the Hebrew University in
Jerusalem. But while in Israel, Mondale also conducted some business
for I.S. Joseph Co. regarding grain trade and was met by his wife.
(For greater information about this summer 1981 trip, <emph
                                    render="italic">see</emph> Political Life: 1981- 1982: Subject

1981.) In regard to his May 1982 European trip, Mondale conducted
business for the Control Data Corporation in Sweden and Greece, but
also met with leaders of France, Greece, and the United Kingdom at a

<p>These records were kept by the secretarial staff of Mondale's law firms and provide some of the
greatest detail regarding Mondale's daily activities. The records start in September 1987
when Mondale returned to Minneapolis to begin working for the law firm
of Dorsey &amp; Whitney and continue through December 1989. These
records were probably used by the law firm for billing purposes. Each
daily record contains information describing how Mondale spent his time:
what activities or services he performed, the number of hours spent on
each activity, and the billing number for the client benefitting from
                                each activity.</p>
