Richard Bartz was a long-time member of the American Savings and Loan Institute (Twin Cities Chapter) and other banking related associations, a member of Elim Covenant Church (St. Paul, Minn.) as well as its historian and treasurer, and an employee at West Group Publishing and several Minnesota banks.

 SCOPE AND CONTENTS

The American Savings and Loan Institute records (1958-1973) include mostly conference materials and programs with some correspondence, meeting notes and agendas, and speech texts used for an annual speech contest.

The records of the Ben Franklin Federal Savings and Loan consist of savings certificates (1951,1953, 1961). There are also certificates from the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Saint Paul (1950-1970). No other records exist in the collection from First Federal Savings and Loan. There is also a single certificate from the Minneapolis Savings and Loan Association (May 20, 1957).

Midwest Federal Savings and Loan Association records include director's meeting minutes (January 21, 1981), flyers, letterheads, certificates (September 11, 1968; October 20, 1972), the Midwesterner newsletter (Spring/Summer 1987), and The Trunk Line newsletter (1972-1981).

St. Paul Federal Savings and Loan Association records include an audit report (1969), brochures, certificates (1941, 1953, 1969-1970), loan records (some on microfiche), clippings, survey maps (1966), and statement of condition reports.

West Group internal publications and newsletters include the Eagan Reporter (1999-2000), West at Work (1997-2001), the West Reporter (1981-1996), and Headline News (ca. 1997-ca. 2001). Headline News was distributed to Bartz via email, which was then printed out, likely by Bartz. It includes some correspondence and memoranda along with company news. The West Reporter is arranged in reverse chronological order, starting with 1996.

The papers from Elim Covenant Church include its articles of incorparation and amendments, along with records related to changing the name of the church (1915-1977), directories (1973-1998), annual reports (1970-1978, 1982-1999), bulletins (2004), records and correspondence regarding grants (2001) and the general business of the church (1994-2004), and the closure of the church in 2004. A memorial and gift book (1937-2003) is also included.

The personal papers in the collection consist of diaries written by Harry Guy Burcalow and Vesta Burcalow, relations of Bartz. Harry Guy Burcalow, the uncle of Bartz, wrote four volumes (1963-1967). Vesta Burcalow, Bartz's grandmother, also wrote four volumes (1960-1963).
