HISTORICAL NOTE

Church Women United is a religious organization that operates at national, regional,
state and local level units, which are interrelated and interdependent. Church Women
United was founded in 1941. The St. Paul area chapter began in 1944 as the Saint Paul
Council of Church Women, and was composed of members of 58 churches, representing eleven
denominations. The name was changed to Saint Paul United Church Women in 1957, and again
in 1967 to Saint Paul Area Church Women United. Members of the organization participate
in community activities and hold several celebrations a year. They strive to strengthen
the visibility and unity of the Christian faith, and to increase the appreciation of and
respect for diversity by including women of all ages, lifestyles, economic groups, and
ethnic backgrounds. They keep informed about current national and global social issues,
and identify with Christian women in every part of the world in mutual responsibility
for all of humankind.
