			<head altrender="biography" id="a2">BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE</head>
			<p> Herschel Vespasian Jones was born August 30, 1861, in Jefferson, New York, to
				William S. Jones and Helen (<emph render="italic">née</emph> Merchant). Herschel
				married Lydia Augusta Wilcox in 1885 and had seven children: Tessie Wilcox (b.
				1886), Carl Waring (1887), Florence Purrington (1889), Paul Merchant (b. 1890),
				Jefferson (b. 1891), Herschel V., Jr. (b. 1893), Moses Chase (b. 1894), and Frances
				Lois (b. 1895). </p>
			<p>Herschel began working at a small Jefferson, New York newspaper when he was 15 years
				old, and purchased it three years later. He moved to Minneapolis in 1885, and in
				1901 established <emph render="italic">Commercial West</emph>, a weekly grain and
				finance paper. He purchased the <emph render="italic">Minneapolis Journal</emph> in
				1908. Over his lifetime, Herschel amassed a large library and art collection and
				made several large donations to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, where he served
				as a member of the board of trustees for several years.</p>
			<p>Carl Waring Jones married Helen Thirza (<emph render="italic">née</emph> Winton) in
				1921 and had three children: Winton, Waring, and Thirza. He attended Princeton
				University and published several local newspapers, including the <emph
					render="italic">Minneapolis Journal</emph>. He was also a magician and edited
					<emph render="italic">Greater Magic,</emph> published in 1938. Both Helen and
				Carl were also patrons of the arts in Minnesota where Carl served as director of the
				Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Carl Jones also served as president of the Minnesota
				Historical Society.</p>

			<head id="a3">SCOPE AND CONTENTS</head>
			<p>The collection documents Herschel V. Jones and related families' personal lives and
				careers, with materials dating from the 1830s-1990s. The collection also contains
				papers compiled by Herschel's daughter, Tessie, which document the genealogy of the
				Jones and related families back to the Revolutionary War. </p>
			<p>Included are both personal and business papers containing correspondence, financial
				documents, news clippings, biographical and genealogical materials, publications, writings by and
				about several generations of family members, an index to and receipts for Herschel
				V. Jones' extensive art and literature collection, Waring's connection with the theater,
				and a large collection of family photographs, documenting several generations of the
				Jones and related Wilcox, Winton, Waring, Cleveland, and Ronald families.</p>
