Manuscripts Collection
These records are primarily written in Norwegian (generally before 1925) and English (generally after 1925), and some German and Chinese is evident, and there may be some Danish language records as well.
Each microfilm reel has two numbered labels. One was assigned by the Minnesota Historical Society when the inventory was created and are in numerical order. The other number was the original label assigned by the American Lutheran Church. These numbers are designated with the abbreviation ALC (which stands for American Lutheran Church) and are [bracketed]. For example, [ALC 7]. Although these numbers are in sequential order, there are gaps in the numbering as the Minnesota Historical Society only purchased portions of the entire original microfilm collection held by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
There are several notations in the inventory which refer the user to another reel of film (for example: previously filmed; see reel ALC 506). These notes were taken from the microfilm reels, and when they are encountered the user should go to reel 506 (or whichever reel the note mentions) to find the desired records. On a few occasions these notations may not be accurate and refer to reels that are not in this collection. For example, reel ALC 228 is not available even though there is a notation referring users to records on that reel. Reels that are not available but are mentioned in see also notes include: ALC 1, ALC 20, ALC 66, ALC 107, ALC 228, ALC 242A, ALC 285, ALC 298, ALC 299, ALC 506, and ALC 629.
The majority of the reels in this collection are on 35 mm film. There are four reels of 16 mm film.
These records complement existing birth, census, marriage, and death records as well as other church records and are a rich resource for family historians.
These records are arranged by church/congregation. Also listed are the city or township, county, and state.
Records of any single congregation may appear on more than one reel of film. For example, Evanger Lutheran Church in Sargent, Mower County, Minnesota is on both reel [ALC 1018] and [ALC 91].
These records are not to be disseminated further or published in any way, including via the Internet without express written permission of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America). They are not to be digitized without express written permission of the ELCA. Digitized for this purpose means the electronic reproduction of a facsimile of the original record. Please consult reference staff for further information.
