Drawings of steam and diesel locomotives and other rolling stock (circa 20,000 items), including drawings of parts and components in addition to erecting drawings, depict all classes of equipment operated by the railroad from the 1880s on. The drawings are supplemented by small-format diagrams, with specification sheets. Photographs of steam locomotives (1916-1917) and freight cars (1923-1966) depict many pieces of equipment. Subject files (1891-1969) pertaining to most classes of rolling stock provide more information on the design, construction, purchase, repair, and maintenance of the Northern Pacific rolling stock. Other subject files document the electrification (1906-1923) of certain western line segments, labor relations (1903-1929) within the mechanical department, and proceedings (1893-1918) of the Master Car Builders Association.

Drawings of locomotives, cars and other equipment. The drawings each have two numbers: an alpha-prefixed number such as Q2889, which indicates size and is the number by which the drawing is actually filed, and non-alpha-prefixed number such as 66501, which is part of a sequence that could have been assigned to any drawing size. The non-alpha drawing number may necessitate looking under several size categories to find the correct drawing. Drawing 66501, for example, might be found in the Q-, R-, W-, X-, or Y-sizes.

Card indexes to the drawings are included at the beginning of the inventory and are housed in 54 archival card file boxes. The inventory is incomplete.

Arrangement: First by size, and then by alpha-prefixed number within each size. The non-alpha-prefixed number is not of any direct use in finding a drawing.

Erecting Drawings, circa 1900-1945

Erecting drawings of a number of Northern Pacific steam locomotives representing engines and tenders in several different classes. Drawings include linen originals and mylar intermediates.

Arrangement: The steam locomotive erecting drawings are rolled and stored in drawing tubes. Each tube contains drawings for a single locomotive class, with the exception of one tube that contains drawings for three small classes. A single tube may contain one drawing, or several. Each tube is identified by the locomotive class it contains. Please include the locomotive class identifier and the location number A3/ov1-3 on the call slip when requesting drawings.
