            <abstract label="Abstract:">Photostatic copies of a journal of Carver's expedition to the Mississippi River (1766-1767), a Survey journal, and a Dictionary of the Naudowessee language, and typed transcripts of  these documents; copies of surveys and deeds to the Carver land grant of 1767, which encompassed some four million acres in present-day western Wisconsin; copies of letters about the French and Indian War (1759) and James Tute's gifts to the Indians (1768); copies of  two petitions to the British government (1769-1770) asking that Carver be reimbursed for his expedition to the Mississippi; and a copy of a recommendation by the British government on this request.  </abstract>

            <c01><did><unittitle>Typewritten transcripts of Jonathan Carver journals (1766-1767) in the collections of  the British Museum.  </unittitle><physdesc>4 folders.  </physdesc></did><scopecontent><p>Ribbon and carbon copies of  various versions of four different manuscripts, with annotations and editings, typed by Agnes McBeath of the Minnesota Historical Society manuscript division in the summer of 1924.  British Musuem manuscript numbers 8949 and 8950.</p>
                <p>The manuscripts include:  Survey Journal from Detroit to Michillimackinac in the Year 1766; Journals of the Travels of Jona [sic] Carver; an untitled 78-page manuscript which seems to be be related to Caver's expedition to the Mississippi River; A Dictionary of The Naudowessee Language; and transcribed speeches interchanged between Carver and Naudouwessee chiefs in council at the great cave near the Falls of St. Anthony where he was adopted a chief in their bands, May 1, 1767.</p></scopecontent></c01>

                <scopecontent><p>Original letter written by Carver at Montague [Massachusetts?] to one Col. John Hawks asking that Hawks send someone to Springfield [Massachusetts?] to take some money.  Hawks may have been the John Hawks (1707-1784) of Deerfield, Massachusetts, who fought in the French wars.</p></scopecontent></c01>
