The Anderson Shop was established in 1879 in Des Moines, Iowa, by Alex Anderson under the name Alex Anderson and Son, Inc. By 1900 the business had relocated to 614 Nicollet Avenue in downtown Minneapolis, and in the early 1920s it moved to the 900 block of Nicollet. In 1937 it held a grand opening at 912 Nicollet. Around 1953 the name of the company was changed to The Anderson Shop, Inc. The firm later added stores in Southdale Shopping Center (Edina, Minn.), and in Wayzata, Minnesota. The business sometimes called itself Anderson's China Shop, and was advertised as featuring fine china, crystal, antiques, linens, furniture, silver, lamps, and gift items. The Southdale store closed in 1978, followed by the downtown location. The Wayzata store closed in 1997.
