The files selected pertain primarily to the Ojibwe, Dakota, Winnebago, Sauk, and Fox, but also to the Blackfeet, Cheyenne, Crow, Mandan, Ottawa, Pawnee, and other tribes of the upper Midwest and plains area.</abstract>

            <head id="a3">SCOPE AND CONTENTS</head>
            <p>The records consist mainly of communications received from superintendents, agents, and
                other field officials of the Office of Indians Affairs; from government officials, from merchants,
                shippers, and other firms; and from Indians, attorneys, and private citizens. They relate to such
                concerns as Indian population, education, health, agriculture, subsistence, emigration, intertribal
                warfare, land allotments and transactions, annuities, depredations, claims, and traders.</p>
            <p>Considerable information on general policy, financial matters, agents and employees,
                buildings and supplies, and other aspects of agency administration is also included.</p>
            <p>Rolls 252, 281, 305, 306, and 825 contain materials on the Northern Pacific Railroad's
                surveying expeditions across Montana and the Dakotas in the 1870s.</p>
