The microfilm contains selections from Record Group 92 in the National
Archives: (a) Consolidated Correspondence File, Fort Snelling, ca. 1820-1868,
selected from boxes 1055, 1056, 1060, and 1061; (b) Consolidated Correspondence
File, Josiah Snelling, 1822-1833; (c) Consolidated Correspondence File, St.
Louis, 1819-1826, selected from box 960.

The records consist largely of correspondence and returns concerned
with purchase and distribution of quartermaster's and other stores for Fort
Snelling. They provide information on procurement of food, forage, firewood,
construction materials, tools, and other equipment; contracts with local
suppliers; supplies and equipment on hand and requisitioned; the post
commissary and its personnel; construction of facilities, and repairs and
losses of buildings and equipment; transportation of supplies; disposition and
use of horses and mules; raising of crops and livestock at the fort; Lawrence
Taliaferro's claim to property on the Fort Snelling reservation (1850s); and
sawmills at St. Anthony Falls (ca. 1837). During the 1850s and 1860s there is
correspondence regarding the sale of reservation property to Franklin Steele,
the evacuation of the fort (1857), and its use by the state of Minnesota during
the Civil War.

Also present are several detailed descriptions of the fort and its
buildings and strategic potential, reports on the state of repair of post
facilities, a few sketches of buildings, and an occasional muster roll.
