<scopecontent>
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION

The Summary Court Records of the 28th Regiment (1906) consists of nine folders of handwritten or typed reports regarding charges filed against enlisted men in Summary Court. While most of the men charged were from the 28th Infantry Regiment, some were from the 2nd and 6th Cavalry, Hospital Corps, and the Field Artillery, 30th and 10th batteries. These units were stationed at Fort Snelling, Minnesota; Camp Monroe, Indiana; and Fort Benjamin Harrison, Lawrence, Indiana during 1906.

Information on the forms includes case number, name, rank, company, list of witnesses, and article of war violated. A statement and signature of the officer pressing charges follows, as does the finding of guilt or innocence, and the sentence (usually several days hard labor, loss of pay, or both). Also listed are numbers of previous convictions within one year and the date of approval and signature of the commanding officer.

Most of the violations concerned enlisted men's violations of military discipline including, but not limited to, failure to report for roll call or other duty, absence without leave (i.e., visiting Mendota), sickness violations, drunkenness, fist fighting, and smoking.
