SCOPE AND CONTENTS

Original materials and photocopies of news clippings from four scrapbooks containing
correspondence, memoranda, reports, trip itineraries, passports, mimeographed bulletins and
circulars, pamphlets, programs, awards, and photographs documenting the political work and public
life of Elizabeth Bradley Heffelfinger, Republican National Committeewoman, 1948-1960, as well as
the home front war work of the Women's Activities Division of the Minneapolis Civilian Defense
Council which Heffelfinger chaired, 1942-1946.

The bulk of the collection focuses both on Heffelfinger's activities in the Republican Party and
her chairmanship of the Women's Activities Division. The roles of the Defense Council's Victory
Aides and the women's division in the sale of war bonds, scrap salvage, food conservation, overseas
donations, and other home front programs is extensively documented. Information is also included
concerning Heffelfinger's role in the Minnesota Birth Control League, her defeated 1944 state
legislative campaign, her post-war tour of Germany on behalf of the U.S. Commission on Displaced
Persons, her appointment as an executive committee member of the U.S. National Commission for
Unesco, Harold Stassen's bid for the 1952 Republican presidential nomination, the 1956 and 1960
presidential elections, and her tours of India and Asia.

Also included within the scrapbooks are copies of Heffelfinger's letters to her family from the
1959 Unesco conference in India and her tour of southeast Asia.

Included within the related papers are correspondence between Frank Peavey Heffelfinger
(Heffelfinger's husband), John McCallum, coauthor of <emph render="italic">College Football, U.S.A.
1869-1971</emph>, Richard Nixon, and others regarding McCallum's book.

Some original pieces of personal correspondence from such notables as Thomas Dewey, Dwight
Eisenhower, Hubert Humphrey, Richard Nixon, Harold Stassen, Sinclair Lewis, and others have been
placed in the Minnesota Historical Society reserve collection with photocopies available in the
scrapbooks.
